A walkthrough of how the Alpaca API algorithm scans, prioritizes, executes, and manages stock orders throughout the trading day.
So basically short all tech earnings
The odds are in your favor. Just make sure to have dry power to go for 10 earning calls and distribute the risk equal.
I asked Grok about the trading behavior around tech earnings before the 2000 crash, and it confirms good earnings reports triggered selloffs at the top of the bubble.
That's what we saw this week.
The 2000 Dot-Com Crash
Tech and internet stocks showed a systematic pattern of post-earnings sell-offs even when results were solid or better than expected. This was especially pronounced in the frothy late-1990s environment and continued after the Nasdaq peaked in March 2000.
A University of California, Berkeley study (Trueman, Wong, and Zhang) of internet firms from January 1998 to August 2000 found:
Prices typically ran up in the days before earnings announcements.
They reversed and fell in the days afterward.
The pattern held regardless of the actual earnings or revenue news.
It persisted into the crash period (including October–November 2000).
Contemporary market reports from mid-2000 (after the March peak) reinforce this. Stocks often sold off when companies merely met or slightly beat expectations, or when guidance was cautious. Examples include:
Microsoft, Intel, and Apple in July 2000 — results that were in-line or only modestly better triggered sharp declines amid fears that high growth rates could not continue indefinitely.
Multiple cases of “beat estimates but stock crushed” behavior, including Amazon (better-than-expected loss but slight revenue miss) and various internet names.
This fits the classic “sell the news” dynamic in highly speculative, high-valuation environments: good results were already priced in, and any hint of slowing growth or “not good enough” guidance was punished heavily. The Nasdaq ultimately fell ~78% from its March 2000 peak to the October 2002 low.

My daughters will watch plenty of documentaries over the next decade about all the broken promises made after COVID, from AI to Mars and everything in between. They’ll ask us, “Were you guys stupid or what?”

The AI compute business has already been run. It was called Bitcoin mining.
Same hardware treadmill: a better chip every year, revenue per machine in permanent decline, margins competed down to the cost of electricity. In mining, the winners turned out to be the chip maker and the cheap-power landlords. The fleet operators in the middle ate the depreciation and, at cycle top, the bankruptcy. Riot's own filing shows the shape: cash profit per coin, GAAP loss once you count the machines wearing out.
The miners themselves tell you how it ends. Core Scientific went bankrupt mining Bitcoin and now lives as CoreWeave's landlord. IREN, Cipher, Hut 8, the same pivot. The survivors of the last treadmill looked at this one and chose to rent out the power, never the chips.
And mining had one escape hatch this business lacks: the coin could pump. Inference only deflates. Every model generation cuts the price of what a GPU produces. There is no halving-day rally for a server rack.
SpaceX is spending $16 billion a quarter to stand in the exact spot the miners walked away from.
Put this video in front of two LLMs and let them figure out the case together. You’ll have the laugh of your life. 😂
