NC is one state with clean comparison to 2022. Mail requests through the same week: Ds 54,401 then, 37,762 now. Rs 14,440 then, 15,473 now. Republican share of the two-party request pool went from 21% to 29%. Does seem like GOP message on mail voting breaking through.

If the Irkutsk researcher died of plague, she was presumably unvaccinated and did not receive antibiotics per protocol. Alternatively, the strain was vaccine-evading and antibiotic-resistant. That seldom occurs naturally. Pneumonic plague is only moderately transmissible.

It’s true, we have been here before! But I think what it reveals is even more interesting. In Sverdlovsk, declassified docs demonstrate the US knew pretty much what happened immediately when USSR had a huge accident in an illegal anthrax production facility. US diplomats happily

We've been here before.
In 1979, anthrax spores escaped a Soviet military facility in Sverdlovsk.
At least 66 people died. It took years become public

Highly recommend this entire thread for anyone interested in a serious discussion about whether or not the Irkutsk plague situation indicates a bioweapon is involved by @ggronvall—a renowned expert on biosecurity at Johns Hopkins who knows a lot about this.

Russia's five-hospital quarantine, FSB involvement, and reported hazmat use in response to the death of a single researcher at a weapons-lineage Irkutsk lab are inconsistent with a lab-acquired plague infection, which would have been treated with prophylactic antibiotics.

Plague is treatable with antibiotics, so why are they responding with lockdowns instead of giving people antibiotics?
A couple of disturbing possibilities.
Replying to @kesvelt
Russian authorities have surely sequenced the Irkutsk pathogen, but refuse to identify it.
Physical lockdown indicates it cannot be controlled with prophylactic antibiotics, implying engineered pan-resistance or that it isn't plague at all.

Pay attention to this one. +11 D for party I.D.—largest Dem lead since early 2009 (Obama inauguration). Gallup is not just another poll; it’s the gold standard.
GALLUP Q3 PARTY ID (with leaners)
🟦 Democrat 50%
🟥 Republican 39%
D+11 is the largest quarterly margin recorded for Democrats since the first quarter of 2009 (was R+4 in Q4, 2024)

BREAKING
Former Republican House Speaker and serial child molester Dennis Hastert has died.
Hastert admitted in federal court that he sexually abused teenage boys while he was a high school wrestling coach.
He never served prison time for that sexual abuse because the statutes of limitations had expired.
He did, however, serve 13 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to illegally structuring cash withdrawals to evade federal reporting requirements, conduct tied to hush money payments to one of the survivors of his predation.
Hastert was 84.

From the start of October through Election Day, Republicans are poised to outspend Democrats on advertising in eight of the ten most competitive Senate races, according to future reservations. In Texas, the GOP have a nearly 8-to-1 advantage in remaining bookings, while Georgia and North Carolina are the only contests with clear Democratic spending advantages:
