SUPER BOWL XVII: THE GAME THAT FORGED THE REDSKINS DYNASTY
The Washington Redskins didn’t just beat the Miami Dolphins that day - they showed exactly who they were.
Miami played with precision and control. Washington answered with power, patience, and the belief that games are still won at the line of scrimmage. Behind The Hogs, they leaned on the Dolphins until they broke.
Then came the moment everyone still talks about. 4th and 1 from the Miami 43. No tricks. Everyone knew the call.
The ball went to John Riggins. He hit the hole, broke a tackle, and took off. Forty-three yards later he was in the end zone. That run wasn’t just a touchdown. It was a statement.
Riggins finished with 166 yards and MVP honors. The Redskins won 27–17.
Joe Gibbs, in just his second season, proved something that lasted: great teams are built by knowing what your players do best and having the guts to lean into it when it matters most.
Power over finesse. Conviction over doubt.
Super Bowl XVII was the first championship of the Gibbs era - and the blueprint for a dynasty that would win with different quarterbacks but the same identity.
It started with one yard to gain. And a team that knew exactly who it was.
