What would I do to make #OntEd and other public institutions safe in the age of Covid and beyond? I’m going to try and make this a simplified three pronged plan. 🧵
Thinking about looming trade issues between Canada and US. Canadians would accept applying the GHGPPA to all crude oil exports to jurisdictions that do not have an equivalent price on carbon. Quick math tells me that’s a ~40% increase in oil price. @JustinTrudeau #CdnPoli
My quick estimate is this action would create about a 5% increase in prices at the pump for US consumers on average. In some markets this could be as much as a 20% increase. And for states like California which already have a price on carbon, there would be almost zero impact.
CAD$160M per day works out to about $6,300 per year for every Canadian family. That goes a long way towards heat pumps, induction stoves, solar generation, battery backup, etc.
I’m less sure about the impact of this proposed change on NAFTA / USMCA. Although it seems clear that if Trump does go ahead with a 25% tariff on Canada then all prior trade agreements are not enforced and potentially moot under a Trump presidency.

Literally crying in the Target parking lot right now. 🧵
I was struggling with unloading my toddler, my bags and wrangling an unruly cart (seriously — why do some lack power-steering?) A fire truck from Redondo Beach (E61) had just parked nearby and four firefighters got out.
Trudeau stepping down is happening for all of the wrong reasons. I will not begrudge him for not wanting the top job considering the current environment, but I strongly think Canada is now vulnerable to some of the worst possible influence in the short to medium term. #CdnPoli

Completely agree that Hybrid Vehicles (including PHEV) are the worst of both worlds. In engineering terms it is the most complex and most expensive solution which is impossible to scale and achieve the necessary zero-emissions results - we need better than net-zero distractions.
Andy Palmer Says “Hybrids Are A Road To Hell”

I agree with @cafreeland that a GST holiday and $250 is not what we need right now. However, I also understand how those are helpful to some households and it might be necessary political calculus. Still I believe that @JustinTrudeau is an excellent choice over the alternatives.
Norway “crossed the chasm” with blinking an eye. I suspect in large part this is due to strategic infrastructure investment, high quality education for all, and they are not being poisoned by lies and propaganda the same way that we are here in North America. #CdnPoli
New petrol and diesel cars are becoming a rarity in Norway.
In 2023, 93% of new cars sold in the country were electric. This is shown in the chart, based on data from the International Energy Agency.
This is a rapid increase from a decade ago when just 6% of new cars were electric.
Here, “electric cars” include fully battery-electric and plug-in hybrid cars (which have a smaller battery and also have a combustion engine).
But in Norway, battery-electric cars now dominate: in 2023, 85% were fully electric, compared to just 8% of plug-in hybrids.

Doug’s Big Dig is a dumb idea for lots of reasons. Aside from estimates of costing $55B + $25-50B overruns, the operating costs for this infrastructure will be eye watering. Specifically this tunnel will require massive air heaters to safely ventilate vehicle emissions. #OnPoli
For various reasons this type of ventilation is not well suited for efficient energy recovery and almost certainly would require natural gas heating equipment for the operating lifetime. If the financial cost wasn’t bad enough, the emissions alone are unpalatable.
The chronic lack of investment in infrastructure, resources, and consumables in #OntEd public education has reached critical levels. This should be a top priority to fix. Failing to make this timely investment will handicap the Canadian economy for a generation.
