I no longer have a job! I was part of a big layoff at @PlanetScale today. I'll miss working there, it was a great experience. Feeling bummed, kinda embarrassed, but also slightly optimistic? Trying to figure out what's next. I'd love to hear any ideas ❤️

Introducing Sora, our text-to-video model. Sora can create videos of up to 60 seconds featuring highly detailed scenes, complex camera motion, and multiple characters with vibrant emotions. openai.com/sora Prompt: “Beautiful, snowy Tokyo city is bustling. The camera moves through the bustling city street, following several people enjoying the beautiful snowy weather and shopping at nearby stalls. Gorgeous sakura petals are flying through the wind along with snowflakes.”

RAG From Scratch: Query Translation (Multi-Query) Our RAG From Scratch video series walks through impt RAG concepts in short / focused videos w/ code. Over the next few days we'll release videos focused on Query Translation, starting with Multi-Query. 🔧 Problem: User queries are a challenge in RAG. If a user provides an ambiguous query, they can retrieve ambiguous documents w/ distance-based similarity search. 💡 Idea: Re-write the user question from multiple perspectives, retrieve documents for each re-written question, return the unique documents for all queries. 📽️ Video: youtube.com/watch?v=JChPi0CR… 💻 Code: github.com/langchain-ai/rag-… 🧠 Related works / ideas: 1/ Ma et al w/ RRR arxiv.org/pdf/2305.14283.pdf 2/ @Raudaschl w/ RAG-Fusion github.com/Raudaschl/rag-fus… 3/ @RickLamers xitter.cf/RickLamers/status/1673…
Wicked trick: vector db retrieval by taking the unique union of k documents (k=n/|x|) where x is a set of queries written by an LLM to get you ~n relevant documents.

From a single snowflake to the terrifying power of an avalanche, snow is something Boise State researchers take seriously.

Time for another holiday giveaway! Today, I will give away ten copies of Effective XGBoost, the best book to learn how to make classification models with XGBoost. My friend @tunguz (who wrote the foreword to the book) famously said, "XGBoost is all you need." It is a little snarky, but like we say about snark, "there is truth in them thar snark." This book packs a lot of punch. Many books spend a lot of time on the theory and then make a model based on the Titanic data. This book goes far beyond just creating models. It looks at a real-world data set and discusses EDA with Pandas and Seaborn, model tuning using Bayesian optimization, interpretation with SHAP, and deployment with mlflow. It also dives into topics that aren't really mentioned much elsewhere: exploring feature interactions, limiting interactions, and monotonic constraints. I will give away ten copies for the holidays. To enter, like this post and comment on what you want to use XGBoost for. If you already know XGBoost in and out, feel free to like and share this post as a gift to me.
