It seems increasingly likely that one day Americans are going to awaken to a mushroom cloud in the Middle East and the beginnings of a World War without a single politician in D.C. having taken a single meaningful step to remove an unambiguously psychopathic president from power

The band on a woolly bear doesn't predict the winter. It's closer to being a record of the summer that's coming to a close.
The caterpillar starts out mostly black, and the rust-colored band widens with each molt. So a wide band means an older caterpillar that's been eating longer, and that usually means a long, warm growing season with plenty of food.
That caterpillar isn't hurrying to build a cocoon. It's looking for a place to spend the entire winter as a caterpillar. Under leaf litter, inside a log, beneath loose bark. And when the cold arrives, its heart stops, its gut freezes, and ice forms in the spaces between its cells while cryoprotectants in its tissues keep the cells themselves from rupturing.
It stays that way for months. In spring it thaws out, feeds for a short while, spins a cocoon out of silk and its own bristles, and emerges as an Isabella tiger moth. Most people have never connected the two.
Its Arctic cousin takes this to an absurd place. Up in the high Arctic, the summer is so short that the caterpillar can only feed for a few weeks a year, so it freezes and thaws over and over, for roughly seven years, before it has enough stored energy to pupate at all. It spends nearly its whole life frozen. It's active for about 5% of it.
So the practical part: the woolly bear crossing the road in October is house hunting. It needs leaf litter, a log, a brush pile, a corner of the yard nobody touches.
If you rake every leaf and bag it, you threw the house away with it.

To suggest we can ‘adapt’ to this is insane
Thank God it's finally a little cooler. I'arrived at an air-conditioned Travelodge on Friday evening and after two long nights of deep sleep I can barely explain how. rejuvenated I feel. I must now get ac for my own bedroom back in Salisbury. Adapting to climate change is going to be essential and expensive for the whole country. The Right - led by Reform - is now pretty much in the right place on net zero (countries like ours only self-harm by actiing unilaterallty and with immature green technologies) but we cannot afford to be laggards on adaptation. Whether it's building reservoirs, flood defences or ensuring schools don't regularly overheat and send children home... it's gonna cost.

"Humanity First" losers when Megatron and Frieza roll up (They are simply exercising their natural right to conquer things that don't look like them):

When my back gave out in January, it was extremely eye opening to me that capitalism is designed to literally kill you if you are physically incapable of working. There is zero consideration for human life or dignity under these conditions, only the bottom line.

Hi, person who was an adult in 2006 here 👋. The normie views of the time were that gay people deserved civil unions, vaccines were common sense, the Iraq War was bad, trans people were harmless oddities, and legal immigrants deserved a path to citizenship.

I can't believe it, but I'm actually with the Boomers on this one.
I went to park my car yesterday and the sign said "Download the app to pay." No coin slot. No pay station. No option to just hand someone some money like a normal human being. Just "download the app."
Well what if I don't WANT an app? What if I don't HAVE a smartphone? What if I just want to pay with cash like we've been doing for the last hundred years? Apparently that's too much to ask. Everything's an app now. Parking. Ordering food. Paying bills. Checking into a doctor's appointment.
They're making it impossible to function without a smartphone. And if you don't have one? Too bad. You're out of luck. Cash doesn't need Wi-Fi. Cash doesn't need a software update. Cash doesn't stop working when your phone dies.
Cash just... works. But apparently that's not good enough anymore. We have to "modernize." We have to "go digital." Well I'll tell you what. If my cash isn't good enough for you, I'll take my business somewhere else.
Because I'm not downloading an app just to pay for a parking spot. And I'm not going to be forced out of society just because I don't want to carry a computer in my pocket everywhere I go.

In this age of gen AI it is honestly such a flex to commission a real artist
Like, y’all should be bragging about commissioning real artists to draw for you
Companies should commission real artists and brag about paying them well
Anyway if you commission artists you’re cool ✨

A quick reminder that Kyle Rittenhouse showed up to a protest like this, shot and killed others and was celebrated by MAGA. Meanwhile Alex Pretti showed up to a protest like this, was shot and killed, then condemed by MAGA. Please stop saying this isn’t political.
