As we mark Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we celebrate the cultures, contributions and resilience of Indigenous communities across the United States. Indigenous Peoples’ Day also serves as a critical day of reckoning – a recognition of the forced displacement of Indigenous Peoples from their land. As we confront the atrocities of settler colonialism and the injustices committed by European/U.S. colonizers, we must also work towards ending the systemic violence that Indigenous women continue to face today.

The announcement by the Trump administration that it has set the first military execution in more than six decades is reprehensible and showcases the inherent arbitrariness of the death penalty and the authorities’ utter disregard for the right to life. The death penalty is a violation of human rights, no matter what. Read more 👇 amn.st/6017BGA7zb

Today is World Day Against the Death Penalty. Amnesty International opposes the death penalty in every case, without exception. It violates the right to life and the right to live free from torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading punishment. California has gone nearly two decades without an execution. Yet more than 550 people there are still under sentence of death, over a quarter of all death sentences in the U.S. Governor Newsom has said: “My ultimate goal is to end the death penalty in California.” He leaves office in January 2027. It’s time for him to act. Read the full blog here bit.ly/3UmWaGp

The death penalty is a violation of human rights, no matter what. Livestreaming the taking of a life by firing squad would only compound the cruelty of this inhuman punishment. bit.ly/3UfO1Uc

In 2019, @CAgovernor said: “My ultimate goal is to end the death penalty in California." We urge him to move the state in that direction by commuting death sentences in California. Human rights must always come before politics. #CommuteTheRow nytimes.com/2026/10/07/us/ne…

Tennessee’s attempted, but botched, execution of Christa Pike was an extreme display of cruelty and the latest reminder that the death penalty is the ultimate cruel, inhuman, and degrading punishment.  Gov. Lee must grant all those on death row clemency and commute their sentences. bit.ly/3VmCBOQ

Tennessee’s botched attempt to execute Christa Pike, as witnessed by her attorneys, demonstrates why the death penalty truly is the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment. All execution methods are inhumane and unacceptable. The death penalty must be abolished, everywhere. apnews.com/article/christa-p…

Christa Pike, aged 50, is scheduled to be executed in Tennessee on September 30, 2026. She was convicted in 1996 of a 1995 murder committed when she was 18, barely out of a childhood in which she endured rape, sexual and physical violence, abuse, and neglect. The state failed to protect her as a child despite having knowledge of what she was facing. Her court-appointed lawyers then failed her at her trial, presenting little of the mitigating evidence of this abuse or its psychological consequences. Call on Governor Bill Lee to stop this execution and grant clemency. Take action now: bit.ly/4hgiuJ6

🚨 2026 is already the deadliest fiscal year on record for ICE. After thorough and extensive investigations, Amnesty International has concluded that there is no way to adequately reform ICE. It must be completely dismantled. Your voice matters. Take 30 seconds to add your name to our new advocacy letter: bit.ly/3Tjai35 Help us abolish ice.⚡ Artwork by Chris Piascik. Since President Trump reopened Dilley detention center in Texas, more than half of the nearly 3,500 people held there have been minors. No child should be held behind bars for being an immigrant. EVER. No child should live in fear of being brutally snatched out of their schools and communities. No parent should worry that their brave decision to flee home to provide a better life for their family in the U.S. could result in even more danger. You can feel the urgency to act within these heartbreaking words from a child who was detained in Dilley: “To this day, I don't know what we did wrong to be detained… I feel like I'll never get out of here. I just ask that you don't forget about us.” Read more and take action here: bit.ly/45vEKt1

More extrajudicial killings. But also more questions. Congress must act. End the strikes. Demand transparency and accountability.
On September 9, under the direction of #SOUTHCOM, Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere executed a lethal kinetic strike on a go-fast vessel operating along established narco-trafficking routes in the Caribbean. Confirmed intelligence revealed the vessel's active involvement in narco-trafficking. The operation killed three narco-terrorists. #JTFWHEM @DeptofWar @SecWar

The sentencing of activists who organized peaceful vigils to commemorate the Tiananmen crackdown is a triple tragedy. Not only is the punishment unjust for them and the victims of the crackdown, but it also denies generations of Hongkongers the space to discuss one of the most consequential events in modern Chinese history. Lawyer Chow Hang-tung was sentenced to seven years and three months in prison, and fellow activist Lee Cheuk-yan was sentenced to seven years - despite them committing no internationally recognized crime. They must be immediately and unconditionally released.
