The iPhone Duo display has 10 layers
Samsung makes 1 of the 10 layers, the OLED. There is glass on both sides, a custom top layer, as well as custom adhesive and more.
Samsung did not solve anything, they provided a part.

The iPhone Duo's transition between open and closed works particularly well because of 3 things acting in unison to create a seamless experience:
1. The iPhone Duo has a consistent aspect ratio across the inner and outer display.
2. So when you unfold, you are basically looking at the same elements in the same position. It feels like you're almost looking through the outer display.
3. The transition is the software part which connects and completes this illusion. Most likely, they are using shader effects with a combination of a horizontal progressive blur paired with a perspective transform of the image, which is mapped to the angle of the fold.
This blending of hardware and software is what creates this magical, fluid transition. Great job to everyone who worked on this!
