Today @TheLancet published our AMIE study with @BIDMC_Medicine, the first prospective study of patient-facing conversational diagnostics in a real clinic.
AMIE is a research system people can chat with before doctors appointments. Testing AMIE outside the lab with real urgent care patients showed how technology can help gather medical histories safely. Clinicians reported that the summaries helped them prepare for visits in 75% of cases and influenced their approach to care in more than half. AMIE’s differential diagnoses also matched the doctors’ final diagnoses 90% of the time giving clinicians more time to focus on patient care.
It’s Google’s first-ever paper in The Lancet’s main journal!

Nobel laureate Karl Deisseroth helped pioneer optogenetics, now used in thousands of labs worldwide to study how nerve-cell activity shapes behavior. But the road he took to get there, and to the prize, was a rocky uphill climb. stan.md/4rXK5Uv

Good choice of topic. I remember vividly standing in the back of a conference room for the spotlight presentation from Ed Boyden @eboyden3 (postdoc or student of Karl Deisseroth) in @CosyneMeeting 20 years ago thinking to myself, "Well, there is a Nobel Prize in that method development."
It is a pity that the recognition is limited to 3 individuals. Ed and Gero Miesenböck contributed significantly to optogenetics. They were all on the @BrainPrize, which was justly awarded to them all rather than just 3.

The 2026 #NobelPrize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel “for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics.”

Claude has discovered a previously unknown enzyme system hidden in the DNA of bacteriophages. Beside the enzyme’s gene sits a long array of repeating DNA—a structure that looks somewhat similar to CRISPR.
We don’t yet understand what this system does, but only a handful of known systems share its features, and all of them are able to cut, copy, and paste DNA. Historically, the discovery of such programmable systems has helped revolutionize medicine. CRISPR, for instance, is now the foundation of genetic medicines. But it will take much more work to learn what this system does, and whether it can be put to similar use.

The floods in the Himalayas, which have left more than 1,000 dead and more than 4,000 missing, began as an unpredictable glacial avalanche. Glacial avalanches have always been a hazard wherever glaciers sit on steep mountain slopes. But as Earth’s climate warms, they will become more common.
