Ken Griffin on the riots:
"Paris should be a real wake up call to every single young American: France is the dream that the left talks about, the liberal safety-net rich socialist Europe. That dream is the nightmare I left from Chicago."
Ken Griffin on Mamdani's NY: "I don't want to be involved with New York politics. I do have 2000 employees who are deeply involved .. NY needs to sort out for itself, the leadership it needs. NY is the greatest city in America [&] deserves one of the greatest mayors."
"People put down roots. We don't want a nation of nomads. The forces that have pushed people toward Miami are strong. And then there's challenges. The roads are really congested."
Ken on midterms: (Republican) candidates he supported "represent values that I think are important to the country." But he brings up his past support for Chicago dems Obama and Rahm Emanuel, to emphasize he looks at talent in both parties.
Loved being part of the Bloomberg team teeing up Ken Griffin's live interview on Bloomberg TV.
Ken started the interview focused on the need for US reskilling for AI. We may see that as a focus in his Griffin Catalyst funding going fwd.

Bring back the newsstand!!!
When I arrived at Harvard in 2014, the most cosmopolitan and glamorous place on campus was Out of Town News.
Longtime denizens of the Square remember Julia Child sourcing German and Italian cooking magazines or Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen thumbing through issues of Popular Electronics at the famed newsstand.
In the 2010s, I often stopped by to grab a chocolate bar and the latest copy of the New Yorker, and I’d spot Cornel R. West ’74 buying a copy of the New York Times or a chic Graduate School of Design student grabbing the latest Architectural Digest. I never took the newsstand for granted. I grew up in a small town in Florida where one had to travel twenty miles to a Barnes & Noble to buy a magazine or newspaper, and unlike Out of Town News, they didn’t carry Le Monde or Die Zeit.
…
A restored newsstand could not only reinstate Cambridge’s access to global journalism, it would also support the flourishing local print magazine scene that has erupted in the Boston area over the past few years.
It would be powerful to see Boston Art Review, House House Magazine (founded by Harvard undergrad Hengzhi Huang Yang ’27), Elastic (launched with Harvard’s support), and Duck (led by James Fraser of the Square’s Grolier Poetry Book Shop and his wife Bella Bennet) all in one place.
It would also link Harvard’s publications to the wider world of journalism — The Crimson and Cambridge Day could be offered alongside the Boston Globe and the New York Times, and the Harvard Review could sit alongside n+1 and The Drift (founded by Harvard graduates).
I find it hard to believe that Cambridge is less capable of supporting an international newsstand than the West Village. Harvard is home to over 10,000 international students, faculty, and researchers, providing a built-in audience for many foreign language publications. We are also a community of readers so devoted to print that we support five book stores, including ones that offer almost exclusively poetry and romance publications.

Our preview of this visit: heavy on pageantry, light on details, a PR coup for Xi and an unusually accommodating welcome by the American president (who can’t really afford another tariff war right now):
