Labas from Vilnius 👋
We’re two days into our delegation in Vilnius, ahead of Lithuania taking over the Presidency of the Council of the EU in January 2027.
So far we’ve met Kęstutis Budrys, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Lukas Savickas, Minister of Energy, along with Vice-Ministers Guoda Burokienė and Tomas Juočys, as well as Kara McDonald, US Ambassador to Lithuania.
Our message throughout has been that the EU’s competitiveness agenda cannot lose steam. Businesses need to start feeling simplification in their day-to-day operations, and a Single Market that stays open to investors will be stronger for it.
Thank you to everyone for the open and constructive conversations so far on what Lithuania wants to achieve during its Presidency and how business can help.
As EU leaders gather in Brussels for today’s European Council, ‘One Europe, One Market’ is back on the table
Simplification is a shared task.
Common EU rules mean little if national barriers keep fragmenting the Single Market

Europe wants to simplify, but what is making things so complicated?
Common EU rules mean little if national layers, repeated reporting and barriers between Member States keep fragmenting the Single Market.

One litre of waste oil can contaminate one million litres of water, according to the European Commission
So what happens to our used cooking oil after the frying is done?
At @Cargill's facility in Ghent, Belgium, used cooking oil and other residual oils are treated as a raw material and turned into biodiesel for trucks and ships
Since production began, an estimated 1,188,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions have been avoided, the equivalent of about 550,000 cars off the road for a year

A stronger Europe starts with a stronger economy.
President von der Leyen’s #SOTEU set out an ambitious agenda for a stronger Europe. Delivering it will depend on whether the EU can create the conditions for businesses to invest, innovate and grow.
That means moving faster on simplification, tackling fragmentation in the Single Market and staying open to the partnerships that strengthen Europe’s resilience. It also means ensuring that competitiveness and the climate transition reinforce, rather than work against, one another.
For American companies invested in Europe, the equation is simple: a stronger, more unified Europe is a more attractive Europe.

The European Commission’s new Public Procurement Act (PPA) proposal is a positive step for procurement in the EU. It would support Europe’s competitiveness by allowing governments and public authorities to access best-in-class products. Similarly, it would simplify procurement through consistent auction design and digitalisation, leading to greater transparency and document reuse. Together, these reforms would help governments invest public revenues in innovative solutions, while tearing down the barriers that keep companies of all sizes from accessing public procurement markets in Europe.
International companies bring significant value to the EU’s public procurement markets. The PPA would allow them to continue contributing to the EU through a clear framework for Made in Europe built around the EU’s public procurement agreements. Undermining these commitments or creating excessive compliance costs would decrease the EU’s access to best-in-class solutions and take limited resources away from the PPA’s other improvements. The current proposal would further the EU's economic security agenda without closing off procurement markets to trusted partners. The PPA can succeed if it creates a simple and quality-driven system that supports the EU’s competitiveness agenda.
Europe’s Single Market needs product information rules fit for the digital age.
Together with 21 other associations, AmCham EU is calling for regulatory information to be delivered digitally as a complement or, where appropriate, an alternative to physical documentation.
A more harmonised approach would reduce administrative burdens and waste while improving accessibility for consumers across Europe.
As the EU revises the New Legislative Framework, now is the time to turn simplification and digitisation into practice. Learn more 👉 amchameu.eu/position-papers/…
