"Dear Prime Minister Carney, I'm really excited we are formalizing our long-distance relationship," Damian Boeselager, a member of the Greens–European Free Alliance, said during a speech in Brussels. "Our history has had its ups and downs, but hey, we recently had a bad breakup with the Brits, and you seem to be going through a rough patch with the US," he said, referring to Brexit and Trump's insane trade war respectively. "So clearly, we are both open for something new." But it was the next part of his speech that has Republicans screeching on social media, because Boeselager listed some of the things that make Canada such a wonderful ally and trading partner. Meanwhile, Trumpers are desperate to convince American voters that Canada has nothing to offer and needs us more than we need them. "And for us, choosing you, Canada, and Mr. Carney is quite easy," said Boeselager. "You have green hydrogen to keep us warm, you have maple syrup to keep us happy, and 'Heated Rivalry' to keep us entertained. You have poutine, the Mounties, Celine Dion, and Leonard Cohen and, of course, almost every famous Ryan or Justin I can think of." "Furthermore, you Canadians possess humankind's rarest skill, and that is the ability to apologize. You have courage, Prime Minister, which you have shown by standing up against Trump's gaslighting, something we still have yet to learn," he continued. "And we know that Canada will never be the 51st state, and apparently maybe also not the 28th member state, even though you would be very welcome, but maybe we could become the 11th province of Canada." "Long live Lake Ontario, across the oceans, our hearts will go on," he added, citing the beloved Dion song. "Thank you." While Canada may not become the 28th member state of the EU, it is now formally moving towards becoming an associate member, a distinction that would afford it a slew of benefits and access, deepening its connections to Europe as its alliance with the U.S. frays beyond repair.
