July and August were amazing months for @altaratech. Quick recap:
1) We hosted 100+ engineers and researchers at our AI for Science symposium.
2) Brought together folks from @AppliedInt, @Tesla, @OpenAI, and more for a dinner focused around AI for the physical world.
3) @evatuecke and I visited a combined 14 cities to spend time with current and new customers.
4) We showcased Altara to 500+ university students at the annual Greylock Techfair.
5) Our team hit double digits!
We're barely halfway through September and already shipping faster than the last two months. We're hiring ML, infra, and forward deployed engineers to keep the growth going. If you want to help scale scientific intelligence, apply below!

For 3 months, we needed an engineer badly. But we didn't hire a single one.
We had just raised our $7M seed and needed to expand. Our investors supported setting a high bar, but they were starting to worry about our hiring pace.
That pressure didn’t change our number one hiring principle: never compromise on our talent bar.
For a team our size, every hire shapes both product AND culture. We look for high-agency engineers with strong technical fundamentals and product judgment who can decide what matters and work directly with scientists to bring their ideas to life.
Three months later, we found an engineer who met our bar. The wait was worth it.

We brought 100+ people together to talk about AI for science 🗣️
When science moves faster, the effects compound. Consider the hardware loop: better semiconductors enable more powerful computing infrastructure, which trains higher-capacity AI models, which in turn help engineers architect next-generation chips.
Yet today, R&D and manufacturing teams still have to pull data from siloed repositories, legacy databases, and lab notebooks to baseline their next experiment. Altara brings all that context together in a single source of truth, so researchers can spend less time reconstructing past experiments and more time running new ones.
There are still so many other ways AI can accelerate scientific discovery, and we want more people exploring them. Realizing this future requires a collaborative space to exchange ideas and test new paradigms.

I woke up at 3 am to watch a rocket launch outside mission control when I was working at @SpaceX
The energy was off the charts, way better than any college football game.
It was incredible to see firsthand what physical world innovation looks like at scale and was one of my inspirations for starting @altaratech, building AI tools for R&D and manufacturing. We're helping more science and engineering teams compress the gap between “that sounds impossible” and “we built it”

I co-founded @altaratech with @catherinehyeo.
We’re building AI for the physical sciences and raised $7M from Greylock to go after some of the hardest challenges in the semiconductor, advanced materials, and battery industries.
some things about me:
> started my research career at 12 (classic fruit flies research)
> later worked on particle physics research at Fermilab on a dark matter search & did LLM research at IBM
> software at @SpaceX (starlink) and @clay_gtm (got to see the early days)
> grew up amongst the corn (Midwest kid)
> once threw a pumpkin 780ft (family participation in Punkin Chunkin) 🎃
> love hiking and snowboarding 🏂
> just hit one year in SF!

Last Thursday, we hosted 100+ researchers and engineers at our AI for Science Symposium.
The highlight was hearing from startups at the frontier of this space, across both the physical and life sciences:
> @chaidiscovery - computer-aided design for molecules and drug discovery
> @medra_ai - autonomous robotics system for life sciences
> @LatchBio - agents and benchmarks for biology
> @onepot_ai - automated small-molecule synthesis
> @altaratech - AI for physical sciences R&D + manufacturing
Together, these teams showed how compounding AI capabilities will drastically accelerate scientific discovery and innovation. We are still extremely early in this problem space, with an immense amount of tech left to build.
Huge thank you to @ddeming_, @SaiVinayak15, @fluorane, @Mattmcpartlon1, and @kenbwork for sharing more about what you’re building and thinking about. Special thanks to @_shreya_s and the @GreylockVC team for co-hosting this event, and to everyone who joined us.

I slept on @evatuecke’s couch for 7 days to see if we should start a company together.
We spent the entire week talking to customers, prototyping, and coding. Then we kept working together after that co-founder trial.
A few months later @altaratech was born... and this week marks a year since we both moved to SF to start this company!

- Biosphere secured a U.S. Army OTA agreement worth up to $9M to develop a forward-deployable biomanufacturing system that produces protein rations from air, water, and energy. The system aims to enable “on-site production of 2,800 calories per person per day for up to 18 warfighters,” with plans to scale to 250 personnel.
- Stone Power has launched. The LA startup is building an American-made large natural gas turbine platform and secured a pre-seed round backed by Forward Deployed Venture Capital and Boost VC.
- Altara has launched with $7M in seed funding to build agentic R&D software for the physical world, led by Greylock Partners.
- @magratheametals raised a $24M Series A led by Resource Technology Partners and Balerion Space Ventures. The SF startup develops technology to create magnesium metal from seawater and brine.
- Waiv Robotics raised a $7.5M seed round and launched out of stealth. The startup is developing an autonomous platform to enable drone landings at sea in rough conditions.
- @maniacvc has backed Western Chemicals, the El Segundo energy startup turning wastewater into fuel (pre-seed round).
- QuantWare raised a €152M Series B. The Netherlands-based startup develops superconducting quantum processors, and the round was co-led by Intel Capital and FORWARD.one.
- Mexico Infrastructure Partners (MIP Real Assets) plans to deploy $12B across the country to develop critical infrastructure, including data centers, energy, and highways.
- Norway has joined the U.S.-led Pax Silica initiative, adding sovereign wealth and critical mineral resources to the allied push to secure semiconductor and rare earth supply chains.
- QNB Group is participating in debt financing to help build out a sustainable fuel plant in Egypt, with a target output of up to 200K biofuel tonnes per year.
- Ornadyne (YC P26) has launched out of Y Combinator to build bird-like drones for military reconnaissance.
- Eridale has launched to build robotics-first restaurants. The startup is developing robotics infrastructure designed to lower operating costs and make high-quality food more accessible.
- Atalanta secured a partnership with Idaho National Laboratory to help accelerate advanced nuclear reactor deployment using AI.
- @anduriltech has announced key partners for its Space Force Golden Dome missile defense work, including Impulse Space, Inversion Space, K2 Space, Sandia National Laboratories, and Voyager Technologies.
- @GallatinAI, Inc. took first place at Cerebral Valley’s National Security Hackathon with an agentic radio agent built on Palantir’s Maven Smart System in 24 hours.
- GUGLI Corporation has opened its new HQ in San Marcos, Texas, which includes a 20K sq ft manufacturing facility (pictured below). The startup develops critical monitoring technology for emergency responder radio coverage, and the new facility will support its talent pipeline with Texas State University.
