Carrie locking her own mother in the closet is treated like a feminist triumph here, but in the novel Margaret is a grotesque, self-loathing religious fanatic who still tried (however monstrously) to contain a power she correctly feared would kill people. The series turns a tragedy about isolation and suppressed rage into “abusive mum gets owned,” which flattens King’s point that both of them were already ruined long before the telekinesis. If the show wants modern sympathy for Carrie it has to reckon with the fact she still ends up slaughtering kids who mocked her, not just her mother.

Book Carrie isn’t the pretty girl getting stylish cafeteria revenge. King describes her as overweight, acne-scarred, and socially invisible “a frog among swans” whose first public humiliation is the locker-room period scene where the other girls pelt her with tampons while she sits frozen in blood. Her telekinesis doesn’t start as controlled payback; it erupts from that shame, then later from the pig’s-blood dousing at prom, and she levels the whole town rather than just embarrassing a couple of bullies. Adaptations keep casting conventionally attractive leads and softening the body horror, which is why the “satisfying” version never quite matches the novel’s uglier, more total collapse.
