Last week, the National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology brought its Biotech Across America Roadshow to Colorado, and Alta was proud to be part of it. On July 24, Commissioner Alexander Titus visited our facility in Boulder to see how we’re using advanced biotechnology to separate rare earths and other critical minerals that are the building blocks of the 21st-century economy. The visit was part of a two-day stop that also included the Colorado School of Mines, the National Laboratory of the Rockies, and a cross-section of Colorado's biotech ecosystem. The commission is focused on how biotechnology can close the gap on one of the most consequential strategic vulnerabilities the United States faces. Alta’s work sits at the center of that challenge: our scalable mineral-separation platform is built on engineered proteins rather than the bulk industrial chemistry that has long prevailed. As control of critical materials increasingly serves as geopolitical leverage, Alta offers a faster path to supply-chain resilience. The @IEA's new Critical Minerals Outlook maps 2035 capacity outside China for rare earths, lithium, and graphite. Each tells a nearly identical story: a wall of mining, and far less capacity to refine, separate, and process it into anything usable. We keep thinking in terms of pulling material out of the Earth, but the chokepoint is downstream -- at the separation and processing stages. That's where supply-chain diversification is won or lost, which is why that's where Alta is focused.
Replying to @fbirol @IEA
While critical mineral projects are being announced & developed across the globe, we see a structural imbalance in diversification efforts Investment outside the dominant supplier remains concentrated in mining, while efforts to expand refining & downstream capacity lag behind

China is cornering the world's critical-minerals market in plain sight, from both ends of the supply chain. It's importing more raw ores while keeping export controls on the processed metals the world needs for advanced manufacturing, energy, electronics and defense. It can do this because of its refining dominance. The Paris-based @IEA says that for 19 out of 20 important strategic minerals, China is the leading refiner, with an average market share of 70%. The only way to reduce that dependence is through smarter approaches for separating, refining and recovering rare earths and other critical minerals outside concentrated supply chains. That’s exactly what we're doing at Alta, with the first scalable mineral separation technology to be developed in generations.
