Friends! Do dogs have Smelly Feet? Asking for a friend. Sometimes I think Ron takes his dedication to Baby Dog a step too far. Rather him than me! This was Lazy Boys’ Sunday yesterday and the Lazy Boys (including Dad!) weren’t in any hurry to get out of bed!

In 1875, a 19-year-old Black jockey named Oliver Lewis made history in the Kentucky Derby, then quietly disappeared. Lewis became the first jockey to ever win the Kentucky Derby, America’s longest-running sporting event. At the time, the race was watched by 10,000 spectators and held at the Louisville Jockey Club, now known as Churchill Downs. What makes his victory even more striking is that he wasn’t supposed to win. Lewis rode Aristide, one of two horses entered by the same owner. The favored horse, Chesapeake, was expected to take the prize. Lewis was reportedly instructed to set the pace and tire the field so Chesapeake could surge late. But things didn’t go as planned. As the race unfolded, Chesapeake fell far behind. In the final stretch, Lewis found himself neck and neck with another horse, Volcano. He seized the moment. Aristide pulled away and won by two lengths. With that decision, Oliver Lewis became the first Kentucky Derby champion. At that first Derby, 13 of the 15 jockeys were African American, as was Aristide’s trainer, Ansel Williamson—facts rarely mentioned in popular accounts of the sport today. Despite his success, Lewis would never ride in the Kentucky Derby again. He retired after that season for reasons that remain unknown. He later worked as a laborer, then as a bookmaker when it was legal in Kentucky. He raised a family of six children and died in 1924 at the age of 68. The man who won the very first Derby helped build the sport—yet history nearly left him behind.

(Janet) Yesterday I told you that another cat had been seen on the allotments - well here it is! The strange thing is that it seems to be living in Ken's shed, where I used to live. I haven't seen it because I don't go to Ken's plot any more but Auntie Chrissie looked inside the shed and said there was food there for it. I wonder who is feeding it?

Friends! General excitement last night when Teddy popped in for dinner. It was like a reunion! He was going to just eat with Baby Dog and me, but my Deputy, Percy, asked to join us. Teddy eats FAST!! But his manners are pretty good. As usual, us cats left the washing up to the dogs! 😹

Meet my handsome ginger pal, Ginger! Found wandering the streets of Halifax, he’s now safe with Cats Protection. He’s had all his teeth removed and is still receiving treatment, but his lovely foster Hoomum is taking good care of him. And he loves my book!

Just saw an exchange that every politician and candidate should note. Someone posted that their dad was considering voting for Ashley Moody because of negative ads about Angie Nixon. And Angie Nixon showed up in the replies, addressed his concerns, explained what she’s fighting for, and made it personal. People want to feel heard, not just talked at. Angie’s response was perfection 🔥

It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota. To understand why this is so appalling, it’s important to know the facts. Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically. Congresswoman Omar went on to graduate from college, work as a community organizer, become the first Somali-American legislator elected to public office in the U.S., and win a seat in Congress. There, she has been one of the Trump Administration’s fiercest critics, which has led the president to repeatedly single her out as someone who he believes does not belong in this country. Now the Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized, and therefore is not a citizen. Federal agents have raided her home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone — all to try and uncover a nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago that will somehow make their case. Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president. And it’s not the first time this has happened. Under President Trump, the Justice Department has repeatedly gone after those he considers his political enemies — from the Attorney General of New York, to the former head of the FBI, to members of the Federal Reserve. In those cases, the prosecutions either stalled or were dismissed for having no basis in law, and the same is likely to happen in this case. But not before Congresswoman Omar’s life has been turned upside down, her legal bills have piled up, and she’s been forced to spend time fighting unsubstantiated charges instead of serving the people of Minnesota. The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views. Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.
