Not enough people know this: in practice, the IMF is controlled by the US. The US is the only country that has de facto veto power at the IMF because the biggest decisions require an 85% supermajority of total voting power. The US' vote share is 16.5% This was by design, and the supermajority threshold was actually moved in 1978 so that the US vote share would continue to give the country veto power. We should not see the IMF as an organisation that serves global development. We should see is as an organisation that serves mainly Western interests — and, above all, US interests.

This is what billionaire ownership of the media means: Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta shut down the No Kings account for hours during the height of their protests. Meta suppressed accounts supporting Brazil President Lula da Silva in the recent election. Larry Ellison’s TikTok blocked advertising for a documentary criticizing Elon Musk. Fight back. Defeat oligarchy. Preserve democracy.

We don’t need to raise taxes on the Banks. We can stop paying them interest on their deposits - this £30 Billion a year drives their outrageous profit levels. The EU and Switzerland already stopped doing this - it makes no sense to continue and even less sense to continue and then moan they make too much money and then tax them more - which they moan about. Our Banks are on massive Benefits - let’s cut them and get our banks back to work. If they can get 4% for doing nothing, they need to be paid more when lending to us - we make a burden for ourselves with these payments for nothing. buff.ly/pi1ohJ7

Please support our fight to #SavePenrhos a place for all ! How anyone could think 500 chalets a tropical swimming pool restaurant and shops and parking for over 1000 cars would enhance Penrhos ! People visit Penrhos from near and far for nature, they don’t want it destroyed for a minority to profit from the destruction of a beautiful unique place, which has so much to offer !Our aim as a community is to raise the funds to purchase Penrhos for the community the wildlife and all who visit ! @DaleVince @PamAyres @DeborahMeaden @HamzaYassin3 please support our fight ! 📸Bernie Humpleby

Our NHS has been hollowed out over the last few decades. Thank you, @premnsikka, for speaking out The UK has 2.4 NHS beds PER 1,000 people Japan: 12.6 Germany: 7.7 Austria: 6.6 France: 5.4 OECD average: 4.2 This is why we have the disgrace of corridor care. It's time to invest and rebuild our NHS

Another gene-edited herbicide-tolerant crop—this time "producing rice & wheat plants that shrug off herbicide doses far exceeding what farmers normally spray." This will allow the heavy spraying of HHPD inhibitors like isoxaflutole, a suspected carcinogen. scienmag.com/scientists-engi…

Can anyone remember the last time @BBCNews interviewed a Palestinian about their experience of the racism of Zionism? Having spent the last two weeks interviewing elderly Nakba survivors in Jordan, driven off their land in their teens because of their ethnicity and religion, I'd be happy to suggest some astonishingly articulate victims of Israeli racism who would be only too happy to tell their tragic stories of eviction, slaughter and dispossession. It is like reporting on the Civil Rights movement in the US and only interviewing outraged Whites @bbclaurak @bbcnickrobinson @JustinOnWeb @BBCr4today
“[Saying] ‘Zionism is racism’ is offensive, it’s antisemitic and it’s dangerous” Broadcaster Jo Coburn says she “watched in horror” as the Green Party passed its motion on Zionism and criticises leader Zack Polanski's defence in his #BBCLauraK interview bbc.co.uk/news/live/c64gv8k2…

Europe's best climates, by how many days per year of truly nice weather you get. Canary Islands always FTW. I listened to your feedback, so this map is different: it rewards how many months sit in the 20–28°C window, and how often those days are sunny, regardless of peaks or excessive swings. In the end, great weather all year round isn't less good because one month is “too hot”, at least that's what I think...
Europe's best climates and where to find them, updated. Calabria FTW, Sicily not so much... Cyprus is surprisingly out because of very hot summers. Madeira and the Canary Islands remain near perfect, of course. This is the accurate data, with stricter parameters. Apologies for the mix-up: I was on mobile all day and crossed the order of the maps. I meant to publish a comparative 2000-2020-2050. Not too bad, but still, this is the one truly on point
