201.9 mm in One Hour: The Storm That Showed What Sponge Cities Can't Do
One hour, 201.9 mm of rain. That hit Zhengzhou, a Chinese sponge-city pilot, in July 2021. 380 people died or went missing there.
Thailand just wrote sponge cities into law. Its national plan, gazetted 5 October 2026, names nine: Bangkok plus eight regional cities. Three are due by 2032, the rest by 2037.
Days earlier, an earth dyke failed at an industrial estate in Chonburi, outside the nine, and at least 34 factories took water.
Sponge design handles frequent rain, not cloudbursts. Credible plans, like Copenhagen's, publish the storm they are built for. Thailand's plan has cities and dates, but no design storm or budget yet.
Would you buy on a sponge-city label, or wait for the engineering?

Berkshire Owns 26.5% of This Oil Producer. Its Carbon-Capture Bet Still Isn't Running
$1.3 billion built what is set to be the world's largest plant for pulling CO2 out of the air. It is still not running.
The owner is Occidental, 26.5% held by Berkshire Hathaway. STRATOS is designed for 500,000 tonnes a year, but after repeated delays operations are now expected in 2027.
Meanwhile, CrownRock lifted Permian output to 804,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day, and the proceeds from selling the chemicals unit to Berkshire cut principal debt to $11.8 billion.
The catch: today's earnings ride a war-driven oil price, and the dividend yields just 1.86%. It suits investors who want oil with a deleveraging story, not income seekers.
Is the carbon-capture plant worth the wait? Tell us below.

3 to 10 Stocks: Peter Lynch's Portfolio Rule and the Art of Selling
Selling your winners to fund your losers is, in Lynch's words, pulling out the flowers and watering the weeds.
Magellan held up to 1,400 stocks because of its sheer size. For individuals, Lynch advised 3 to 10: enough to spread risk, few enough to follow closely.
His sell triggers track the story, not the price:
1) The original thesis has broken.
2) A fast grower has run out of room to expand.
3) A stalwart's P/E has run far ahead of its growth.
4) A cyclical nears peak capacity as inventories build.
Which flower in your portfolio have you been tempted to cut?

24 US Stocks Still Wear a Bull Label While the Nasdaq Falls 4.5% in a Week
A car with the engine off keeps rolling downhill for a while. Markets do the same. In the week of October 12 to 18, 2026, 24 of 52 US stocks on our list still carried a full uptrend label while the Nasdaq fell 4.5 percent. The labels follow moving averages, so they lag price.
Highlights
1) US CPI hit 3.7 percent versus 3.6 expected
2) CoreWeave fell 25.2 percent, the SOX 11.4 percent
3) The KOSPI fell 14.5 percent, India's Nifty rose 2.78 percent
4) WTI closed at 101.41 dollars, up 10.4 percent
5) October Fed hike odds fell to about 15 to 17 percent

Your Mix, Not Your Picks, Drives 91.5% of Portfolio Swings
91.5% of the variance in quarterly returns came from allocation policy in Brinson, Singer and Beebower's 1991 study; selection and timing explained under 9%. Evelyn, a 35-year-old Chicago marketing director, learned it the hard way: $185,000 in QQQ, ARKK and software stocks lost $70,300 in 2022. A 45/20/20/10/5 mix of US stocks, international stocks, bonds, gold and cash lost about 14.6% that year.
The 30-minute fix: equity at 110 minus age, adjusted for risk tolerance; the rest in bonds, gold and cash. With the Fed at 3.75%-4.00%, BND yields 4.98% against 3.4% CPI. Hold bonds in the 401(k) and gold in the Roth to avoid the 28% collectibles rate. Review once a year and rebalance only when a bucket drifts 5 points.
If the market fell 30% tomorrow, which bucket would catch you?

The Oil Drillers ETF Where All Top 5 Holdings Are Refiners
$135.51. That was the Dated Brent spot price on October 2, 2026 (EIA), as a war squeezed physical crude. The obvious one-ticket trade is XOP: 51 US oil and gas stocks, nearly equal-weighted, the largest just 3.11%.
The twist: as of October 8, its top five are PBF, Marathon, Valero, HF Sinclair and Phillips 66. All refiners. Refining is 26.50% of the fund, and it is winning because diesel and gasoline rose faster than crude. PBF is up 182.98% in 52 weeks.
Forward P/E is 8.12x. But Street targets on the top three sit below their prices, the fund fell 14.76% in Q2 when oil retreated, and its 10-year return is 3.52%/yr. Occidental, our deep dive later today, sits at #15 with 2.62%.

Thailand's $30bn Malacca Bypass Is Still on the Map. Its NPV Is Now Negative.
Why keep a megaproject on the map after your own committee priced it below zero?
Over 102,500 ships crossed the Strait of Malacca in 2025. Thailand's answer: two ports joined by about 90 km of road and rail.
In July a Finance Minister-led committee re-ran it: NPV went from over +600bn baht to −10.3bn. Ship to land to ship takes over three days, and 9 of the 10 largest lines had already invested elsewhere.
Both port environmental reports were then withdrawn; Cabinet only acknowledged the findings. China opened its 134 km Pinglu Canal. Thailand funded rail.
A line on a map is not a project. Follow permits and budgets.
Would you bet on a land bridge against the busiest strait on earth?

Gold Is Down 25% From Its Record. Can the Largest Gold Miner Still Print Cash?
$5,594.82 an ounce. That was gold's record on January 29, 2026. On October 9 it traded at $4,193.87, about 25% lower. The company most exposed to that move is Newmont, the world's largest gold producer at 5.9 million ounces in 2025, roughly 5% of global mine supply after its 2023 takeover of Newcrest. The cash story holds: record Q2 free cash flow of $2.2 billion even as output fell 12.5%, $3.4 billion of net cash at mid-year, and a share count down more than 9% since February 2024. The pressure points: spot now sits below the $4,500 gold price behind 2026 guidance, and each $100 per ounce moves pre-tax earnings by about $505 million. Q3 results land October 22. Discounted cash machine, or leveraged bet on a metal that already peaked?
