🌱 Want to know if your legume crop is fixing enough nitrogen? Check the nodules.
Around 12 weeks after emergence, use the four Cs:
🔹 Collect samples from 3+ paddock locations
🔹 Clean roots carefully
🔹 Count nodules and check for a healthy red/pink colour inside
🔹 Calculate the % of adequately nodulated plants
At least 70% adequately nodulated across three samples indicates good nodulation; less than 50% is poor.

🚜🌱 WA Growers – we want to hear from you. The 2026 Grain Legume Grower Survey is now OPEN.
GGA is inviting Western Australian growers to share their experiences, insights and perspectives on the use of grain legumes in crop rotations, what’s working, what’s changing, and where are the gaps.
Since 2022, GGA has partnered with 15 grower groups across Western Australia through a GRDC-investment into grain legumes which investigates local barriers limiting adoption. GGA is now interested in understanding whether grower confidence in grain legume production has improved over this time.
Your input will help guide future GRDC investments into grain legume RD&E in WA.

🌱 Legumes are back in rotations - but how much nitrogen are they really contributing?
Rob Harrison (@DPIRDbroadacre / @MurdochUni ) presents HALO project research at #GRDCUpdates Perth (17 Feb), exploring how harvestable annual legumes supply nitrogen to following cereal crops.

🌾Read the two latest case studies from the Lakes Information and Farming Technology (LIFT) grower group, exploring how growers in the Lake Grace region are boosting the productivity and profitability of grain legumes.
From refining lupin harvest techniques to integrating legumes for better nitrogen management and soil health, these stories from the Smith and Clarke farming families highlight innovation, adaptation, and resilience in WA’s grain industry.

This project was established with investment by the @theGRDC. Grower Group Alliance (GGA) are collaborating with @DPIRDbroadacre, agribusiness', researchers, grower groups and growers to address the low adoption of grain legumes in WA farming systems.
These case studies are proudly supported by LIFT, GGA, and DPIRD, helping close the economic yield gap for WA grain growers. 🌱
