And yes, it can be significantly cheaper. Sounds great… until you actually need the claims department. Here’s our experience. 🧵 ACCIDENT #1 My daughter was in an accident that wasn’t her fault. Tesla took about TWO MONTHS to decide the car was totaled. During those two months, she had a rental car. No one told us the rental was expiring while Tesla was still deciding the claim. No surprise bill. Eventually Tesla totaled the car, paid it off, and we returned the rental. It was painfully slow — but it worked out. So when ACCIDENT #2 happened July 3, why would we expect anything different? This time it was a relatively small fender bender. But while the vehicle was in the tow company’s possession, we discovered additional damage that we believe occurred there. That turned a simple accident into an investigation. My daughter received a rental. July passed. August passed. The investigation continued, with emails ignored or minimal communication. Then at the END OF AUGUST, we were suddenly told her rental coverage was exhausted. Not only that — apparently my 19-year-old daughter was already about 14 DAYS OVER at approximately $45 PER DAY. We found out after the fact. We were told she could possibly be reimbursed once the investigation was completed. Then the rental charge hit her bank account. Her account went negative. Bills started bouncing. Fees followed. And I have a serious question: How do you expect a 19-year-old mother, just starting her life, to handle an unexpected charge that puts her bank account in the negative? She paid for insurance. She did what she was supposed to do. Most 19-year-olds don’t have thousands of dollars sitting around to absorb the financial consequences of an insurance company taking months to investigate a claim. And then came the domino effect. No car. Negative bank account. Bills bouncing. Couldn’t get to work. Lost her job. Her young son couldn’t get to preschool. Think about that. She had insurance so an accident wouldn’t financially derail her life. Instead, a July 3 accident snowballed into September and affected her transportation, job, bank account, bills, rent and her child’s school.
