The Brady-Belichick Patriots weren’t merely an outlier. They were operating on a different planet.
From 2012 to 2019, on 1st downs outside the red zone with 3:30 to 1:40 left before halftime:
• New England posted a 68.1% run rate, 89% higher than the average of the other 31 teams (36.1%).
• The Patriots ran 77 times versus a 41.2 average for the other 31 teams.
In that same situation across 1st and 2nd downs, they attempted only three total passes of 20+ air yards (80% fewer than the average of the other 31 teams).
This is what playing keep away looks like: drain the clock and reduce the opponent’s opportunity to answer before halftime.
This strategy helped set up one of the Patriots dynasty’s signature advantages: securing the final possession before halftime and creating opportunities to score on both sides of the break.
Just look at the separation on this chart.
We explain the entire strategy in much greater detail in the video below. 👇

My book is officially out today.
It was supposed to start with a quote from Jimmy Buffet on the 1st page, but it somehow got left out.
“I’m so damn lucky to have an all-star cast
Some lovely, some crazy
Who ever thought this would last?
You know if I hadn’t lived it, I’d read it myself”
That kinda sums up this 23 year journey. Lots of talented, crazy people and a fairytale trip that is hard to imagine.
I hope everybody enjoys it and thank you all for coming along for the ride.

I’m just gonna get ahead of this. If anybody in Massachusetts hears another sonic boom tonight around 7pm just know I’m playing in Drake Mayes celebrity softball game. It’s prob just me just hitting bombs. Nothing to worry about unless you live within 100 miles of the stadium.

In this economy, capital is triumphant, labor treads water. Big tech companies are worth more and use less labor than market leaders a generation ago, driving down labor's share of output. AI will intensify this trend. My latest: wsj.com/economy/jobs/capital…

Old Balls @jerrythornton breaking out the prayer cards of deceased loved ones in the 3rd quarter is still one of the best attempts at changing momentum I’ve ever seen. Nobody will ever says didn’t leave it all out there. #NEPats
