A moment of pride for Syria, and a powerful message to the world. 🇸🇾
Today, at his very first Executive Committee (ExCom) session as @Refugees the UN Refugee Agency High Commissioner for Refugees, @BarhamSalih chose to highlight the words of Syria’s Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management, @RaedAlSaleh3 , in front of a room filled with ministers, ambassadors, and senior government officials from around the world.
ExCom is one of the most important forums in the international refugee system, where governments discuss refugee protection, oversee UNHCR’s work, and make decisions that influence the lives of millions of displaced people.
In the concluding part of his address, the High Commissioner said:
“His message was simple: when we speak about refugees and displacement, we should do so with humility. None of us knows who may be forced to flee tomorrow, or who may be called upon to offer refuge.”
What makes this moment particularly powerful is the person behind those words.
Minister Raed Al-Saleh knows displacement not only through his responsibilities in government, but through his own lived experience. A man who spent years in displacement camps is now helping lead the enormous task of rebuilding Syria and creating the conditions for others to return home.
For years, Syria has been at the centre of international discussions about displacement, humanitarian crises, and refugee protection. Today, it is equally important that Syrian voices, experiences, and institutions help shape the international conversation about recovery, return, and solutions.
There is something deeply meaningful about seeing a Syrian leader’s experience and words resonate at this level, especially as Syria works to rebuild after so many years of suffering.
Proud of this moment, and of Minister Raed Alsaleh

In June, @AfD MP René Springer stood in the German Bundestag and spoke about foreigners supposedly “shaking their balls in Shisha bars” while living on welfare.
Recently the AfD wins around 44% in Saxony-Anhalt and continues to register unprecedented wins in other part of Gemenay, their anti refugees and migrant rhetorics has big part into this win.
So perhaps a small accounting exercise is useful.
Germany currently has 7,330 professionally active doctors of Syrian nationality, according to the German Federal Medical Association.
If we use a modest estimate of around 30 patient contacts per doctor per working day, that would mean 220,000 patient contacts every working day.
Conservatively, More than 50 million patient contacts a year.
Now the interesting part. According to Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research, training a doctor in Germany costs the state more than €200,000. So what would it cost Germany to produce 7,330 doctors from scratch?
More than: €1.46 BILLION.
In other words, Germany received a medical workforce from the state of Syria alone that would cost it more than €1.46 billion to reproduce from scratch.
And based on an average gross salary of €90,000 (meaning about €660 million in annual wages) and after applying Germany’s current income-tax plus employee and employer social-security contribution rates, those doctors now generate an estimated:
~€400 MILLION every year in taxes and social-security contributions.
So the balance sheet looks roughly like this:
7,330 working Syrian doctors.
More than €1.46 billion to train the same number from scratch in Germany.
More than 200,000 patient contacts every working day.
More than 50 million patient contacts every year.
~€400 million in estimated taxes and social-security contributions every year.
And that is Syrian doctors alone.
Not doctors from Afghanistan, Iraq, Ukraine or dozens of other countries.
Not nurses. Not pharmacists. Not engineers.
And this still excludes the many thousands of other refugees working across Germany, paying taxes, running businesses and keeping parts of the economy moving.
Are all refugees working and perfectly integrated? Obviously not.
There is plenty to debate about why, what has failed, individual responsibility, and what governments could do better. Have that debate.
But if we are going to keep a balance sheet, perhaps use both columns. Because some German politicians seem remarkably good at calculating the cost of refugees.
The contribution column?
Strangely, the calculator keeps breaking. #Remigration #Refugees @Refugees @Tino_Chrupalla @natalie_pawlik @Rasha_nasr_

In Damascus today, I met President Ahmad Al-Sharaa to discuss the rising number of Syrians returning home, the millions still displaced, and the support needed to rebuild lives after years of conflict.
A peaceful and inclusive Syria is the foundation for lasting recovery. Syrians are determined to rebuild. The international community must match that determination with sustained support, investment, and solidarity.

Congratulations to Mayor Mamdani. He inherited a huge budget deficit, brought it down to zero, and still invested in childcare, housing and city infrastructure.
When municipal governments stand with working families, not billionaires, there is nothing they cannot accomplish.
When we came into office, we uncovered a $12 billion budget deficit.
Today, I’m proud to say we brought it down to zero.
We didn’t close the gap on the backs of working people.
We closed it while funding parks, libraries, safer streets and making historic investments in public housing.
Call it Pothole Politics. Call it Democratic Socialism. It's government that delivers for the people who make this city run.
That’s what New Yorkers deserve. And that’s what we will keep fighting for every single day.

There is now overwhelming evidence of the use of dogs to rape Palestinian inmates in Israeli prisons - first reported in our Oct 2024 Al Jazeera Investigative Unit film GAZA. /1
An Israeli analyst confirms accounts of Palestinians being raped and sexually assaulted using dogs at Israeli detention sites, citing two guards he spoke with at Sde Teiman torture prison.
“One had witnessed it and said it was too awful to describe. The other said he had heard about it from others and believed it was true.” Ben-Ephraim shares documented cases by various human rights groups below.
“This happened. This is still happening. The evidence is overwhelming,” he notes.

While the world focuses on the destruction in Iran, we must not ignore what Israel is doing in Lebanon.
1,461 have been killed.
4,430 have been injured.
1.2 million have been displaced.
Israel now occupies 14% of Lebanon.
Enough is enough. No more US military aid to Israel.

As I step into a new chapter, I’m reflecting with gratitude and a sense of responsibility for what lies ahead.
I am deeply honored to be stepping into the role of Special Assistant to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees at a moment that feels both critical and unprecedented for the international protection system. I am inspired by Dr @BarhamSalih’s visionary leadership, and privileged to support him at this pivotal time. I am also excited to work alongside UNHCR colleagues who do extraordinary work every day — many of whom I have worked with over the last decade and who have supported our movement.
For me, this role is not just a professional step. It’s personal. As someone with lived experience of forced displacement, I see this as an opportunity to carry the perspectives, realities, and hopes of our communities into the spaces where decisions are made every day.
None of this would be possible without @RefugeesSeat
This opportunity represents so much of what we have worked toward as a movement: ensuring refugees are not only represented, but empowered to work, lead, and influence the issues that shape their lives.
I co-founded R-SEAT with an idea, but what we built together became so much more than an organization. We built a family. We built a movement. We built partnerships, trust, and a shared belief that refugees don’t just belong on the agenda; they belong in the places where decisions are made, where policies are shaped, and where real change happens.
To the R-SEAT team: you are my colleagues, my friends, and my chosen family. I learned so much from your passion, your courage, your integrity, and your commitment to this work. Thank you, and thank you to our partners for walking this journey with me and for believing in what we were building together.
Over the years, many opportunities came, but I stayed because what we were creating at R-SEAT mattered. Leaving is not easy. In fact, it’s one of the hardest decisions I’ve made.
R-SEAT will always be part of who I am. This is not a goodbye; it is a continuation of the mission, just from a different seat at the table.
With deep gratitude for what has been, and hope for what lies ahead.

Mark Carney’s speech at #Davos was powerful one of those moments where one feels genuinely proud to be Canadian.
It was bold, clear eyed, and unapologetic; a speech that didn’t hide behind comfort or nostalgia, but instead called things exactly as they are. That kind of honesty, especially on a global stage, is strength. And it’s something we don’t show often enough.
Having worked with many politicians and policymakers over the years, it has always pained me how slow and reluctant #Canada can be. We’re respected as polite, educated, reasonable but rarely as daring, decisive, or bold. Too often, that same caution shows up in our leadership.
That’s why this speech matters.
It felt like a shift in mindset. A reminder that we don’t have to choose between values and strength that we can be principled and powerful, cooperative and confident.
I try to stay neutral and grounded in my advocacy work, and I’ll continue to do so. But no one including me can ignore or downplay a speech like this. Credit where it’s due. Huge kudos to PM Carney for delivering something this honest and this strong.
I hope this way of thinking becomes part of a new Canadian future not just in Ottawa, but among the people. A Canada that earns respect for itself and its people not only for being kind and educated, but for being courageous, serious, and willing to lead. cbc.ca/news/politics/mark-ca…
It’s sad that so many dictatorships today seem to fall only with the involvement of major powers. Still, my heart is with my many of my #Venezuelan friends today. After years of pain, seeing the dictator finally fall and be arrested along with his wife — brings real hope. I truly wish this moment leads to the future they’ve long dreamed of, where they can safely return, rebuild, and visit their country again. From #Syria with love!

R-SEAT congratulates Dr. Barham Salih (@BarhamSalih) on his election as the next United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. A former Kurdish refugee who later served as the President of Iraq, Dr. Salih brings a unique combination of political leadership and lived experience of forced displacement. We believe this perspective will be fundamental to UNHCR’s next chapter.
R-SEAT advocates for meaningful refugee participation that goes beyond symbolism, ensuring refugees have tangible influence over policy priorities and outcomes, grounded in their lived experience of forced displacement and expertise. We have consistently called for leadership that reflects these principles, including the appointment of a High Commissioner with lived experience of forced displacement.
Dr. Salih participated in R-Space event in Geneva this past October, alongside other candidates, where he shared his priorities and vision for the mandate, including a strong emphasis on protection and advancing durable solutions. His political experience and visionary leadership, combined with his personal understanding of displacement positions him well to lead UNHCR at a moment of profound challenge for the international refugee system.
We see this appointment as an important step toward leadership that reflects lived experience, and we look forward to continuing our close collaboration with the new High Commissioner and UNHCR.

I am honoured to have been elected as the incoming United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. As a former refugee, I know first-hand how protection and opportunity can change the course of a life. That experience will inform a leadership approach grounded in empathy, pragmatism, and a principled commitment to international law. My foremost responsibility will be to refugees and others forced to flee—upholding their rights and dignity and advancing durable solutions so that displacement remains a temporary situation, not a permanent fate.
At a time of record displacement and severe pressure on humanitarian resources, delivering on UNHCR’s mandate requires a renewed focus on impact, accountability, and efficiency. This is a shared responsibility. UNHCR will build on the important reforms undertaken in recent years to strengthen operational effectiveness and value for money. I will work with Member States and partners across the public, private, and philanthropic sectors to mobilize the capacity, resources, and collective will needed to reach those most in need.
I am grateful to the Secretary-General, António Guterres, and to the General Assembly for their confidence, and to High Commissioner Filippo Grandi for his principled and tireless leadership during a period of extraordinary global challenge.
I look forward to working closely with UNHCR’s dedicated staff, states, partners, host communities, and, most importantly, refugees themselves to advance protection and durable solutions fit for both the promise and the perils of the 21st century.

Hopeful for Senate passage within days and then to President Trump’s desk for signature.
