Med Student, working in and concerned about the NHS

Joined April 2023
I’m a med student. By the time of application I will have had six years of med school and two years as a junior doctor. To assist and train others on robotic cases I’d need a further three-seven years of specialty training. Why can a PA walk in from day one? We feel disillusioned
1/4 It is sad to see the very public onslaught on Physician  Associates. We are a unit with a proud history of teaching, training and investing in our junior doctors at all levels. We are an @RCSnews accredited fellowship training centre in Robotic surgery (@IntuitiveSurg)

NHS hospital: I noticed the clock on the wall showed the wrong time. A nurse told me they knew, but they wouldn’t report it because replacing the battery through the NHS would cost £70. A £2 battery... £70. How? Why? That's when I began to dig further. 🧵

Impossible not to listen to this & think WTH is @UKFPO doing. If Dr Elaine does not meet the criteria for pre-allocation in this (farcical) system, I don't know who does. @wesstreeting this needs sorting. @ShelaghFogarty @LBC - worth seeing this. Another reason Res Drs are fed up
Dr Elaine is the UK’s first deaf/blind doctor. She is under multiple specialists in London. She is on 24 hour LTOT. Her request to be pre-allocated to London was declined and was allocated Dorset. This is a catastrophic failure by the @UKFPO, who simply isn’t hated enough.

"We fight once more for a regulator that can clearly define who can, and who cannot, practice medicine. Today I’m announcing for the first time in over 150 years, we are launching a new BMA register solely for doctors." @DrPhilBanfield addresses #BMAARM25 calling for doctors to act now and sign the BMA register 👇 activism.bma.org.uk/page/172…

New F1s given placeholder jobs as there are too few existing posts for them (after being randomly allocated). F2s completing their final rotation to a barren jobs market and likely unemployment. IMG SHOs having their contracts dropped and not renewed. Heads must roll.

Every time you can’t get a GP appointment, or you are waiting 2 years for an elective surgery or 24 hours in A&E remember this is a political choice. We have unemployed doctors whilst the NHS is in crisis and clearly the government just doesn’t care.

Why are resident doctors striking? Fully qualified doctor: £38,800 Doctor’s assistant: £47,810 Name *any* other profession where an assistant is paid £9,010 more than their supervisor. @wesstreeting you continue to enable this farce when nhs funding is so scarce.
Secretary of State @wesstreeting is urging resident doctors to vote no on the ballot. The pay award for 2025/26 gives them an average uplift of 5.4% this year, the highest award across the public sector. Find out more: healthmedia.blog.gov.uk/2025…

In the hospital I work at, only a single F2 has been offered a training number. The rest are in limbo / contacting aus/nz agencies. Why are we not making sure that doctors who want to work get to keep working?

saddened to be told today off our very enthusiastic and brilliant F2 who is interested in ortho that only 6 of her cohort at our hospital have employment from August… something has gone very wrong

Following on from yesterday Genuine question….. Can anyone tell me any professional circumstance that an assistant earns more than the people that mop up after them?? Make it make sense @wesstreeting 🤷‍♂️
Take a moment to reflect on the fact that newly qualified doctors are asking for £22 ph After rigorous selection, years of graft and £100k of debt they currently earn less than a receptionist? And I don’t want to hear any “jam tomorrow” nonsense Residents have my full support

We are going to lose an entire generation of scientists. NSF, one of the largest federal funder of STEM education has seen an 80% reduction in funding, including support for trainees, so far this year. “You can’t have science without scientists”

Extremely disappointing from a patient perspective too. Waffle about engaging more effectively elsewhere, frankly they've never engaged with public and patients here or elsewhere. They react petulantly to any kind of challenge, the GMC and its current leadership is a disgrace !

One way to escape being held to account? Run away. Disengaging from the very people that fund you! An extremely disappointing move by the GMC.

@gmcuk I’m a member of the public and a patient. I want to see what’s going on with you in an easily accessible way-the best way to do that is on X. Are you really expecting the public to go ferreting around your web site? You really are a disgrace letting the public down in this way, let alone the people you’re meant to represent.

BREAKING: A government worker reports that fresh-faced 19, 20, and 21-year-olds from DOGE are running 15-minute kangaroo courts to decide if federal employees keep their jobs. Bureaucracy just turned into an episode of Shark Tank, but with interns holding the gavel.

1) NHSE did not expand postgrad specialty jobs enough for the *planned* rising No of UK medschool graduates. Due to NHS monopsony = no career advancement+unemployment 2) From 2019 any doc in developing world can apply to those NHS jobs if passed PLAB test even if NOT UK resident.
