In the video from Chernihiv, a father screams in agony over the body of his daughter following a Russian attack. That scream is unbearable. It is the cry of a parent whose most precious person has been taken away. Today, October 29, Russia also attacked a railway station in Dnipro. According to Ukrainian authorities, 13 people were killed and at least five others injured when a Russian drone struck a platform where a passenger train was waiting. Two more people were reported killed in Chernihiv. All of this is happening on the same day. In the same country. In the fifth year of Russia’s full-scale invasion. WHERE IS THE SECURITY? WHERE IS THE PROTECTION OF CIVILIANS? Putin, the great “humanitarian”, isn’t that right? Russia continues talking about peace, humanity and its rights while Ukrainian parents bury their children. AND WHAT IS HAPPENING IN OLESHKY AT THE VERY SAME TIME? The White House is presenting a temporary humanitarian ceasefire in Russian-occupied Oleshky as a diplomatic achievement for Melania Trump. Russia, which has occupied the town since February 2022, is now promising humanitarian aid and safe evacuation for its residents. I support every genuine effort to save civilian lives. Ukraine is participating in this humanitarian initiative too. BUT HUMANITARIAN AID MUST NEVER BECOME POLITICAL PUBLICITY OR A WAY TO WHITEWASH THE OCCUPYING STATE. Who bears responsibility for the suffering of people living under Russian occupation? Who will guarantee that civilians can freely choose where to evacuate, including Ukrainian-controlled territory? Who will independently verify their safety? And while the Trump administration celebrates diplomatic achievements, Russian drones continue killing Ukrainian civilians. A LOCAL CEASEFIRE DOES NOT ERASE THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR A WAR. Nor should the suffering of Ukrainian civilians become a backdrop for political ratings and publicity. And I demand that the United States take responsibility for its own political and military decisions that affect Ukraine’s ability to protect civilians. Russia bears responsibility for its attacks. But every government making decisions about Ukraine’s defence must also be accountable for the consequences of those decisions. I am exhausted by the fact that, in the fifth year of this war, families are still being torn apart while much of the world acts as though this is normal. No political negotiations, approval ratings or economic interests are worth the life of a child. UKRAINIAN CHILDREN DESERVE TO LIVE. THEIR PARENTS DESERVE TO WATCH THEM GROW UP.
