Out of curiosity, grad students/faculty, how many of you are the first person in your family to get a PhD (but not a uni degree, ie your parents have uni degrees but not a PhD or other grad degree)?

I’m interested in exploring working with an academic coach for postdoc applications - it would be great to have any personal recommendations, especially for people with experience of working with PGRs/ECRs and/or historians. Please feel free to DM me!

What book(s) do y’all go to for inspiration/motivation? #Blktwitterstorians #twitterstorians
Reimbursement culture assumes a ton: family money, savings, etc and can close the door to a lot of exceptionally talented/smart people from diverse backgrounds of all sorts. If we want academia to change, we need to make it economically (in addition to other things) accessible!
Replying to @AliMicMac
Lllllooookkkk. Reimbursement life is of the Devil. And then you are at the mercy of the postal service! Just a supreme struggle that sometimes makes you wanna scream.
Currently trying to balance reimbursement life + stipend life and @CulturedModesty’s words really hitting home! Would love to see a time when grad students aren’t having to fund travel upfront on credit cards etc #phdchat
As it seems this is starting to get out and I think I’m allowed to share now - I’m thrilled to have been selected as the Barra Material Culture Dissertation Fellow at the McNeil Center at U Penn for the 2023-2024 academic year!

Hey historians! Who is working on late 16th/early 17th century maroons in Hispaniola? I know of Schwaller's article and Dieve's older stuff, is there new work coming out in either Spanish or English? @jjponcevazquez @DrJesseCromwell @DrDanielleTW @_JohnPaniagua

Alright #twitterstorians, it’s that time again: who is doing good work on the relationship between anthropology and studies of human fertility/population growth? Particularly interested in historical accounts about these ideas in the 1970s. Thanks for any and all recommendations! – at Philadelphia, PA

I'm hoping to speak with some UK academic mums about navigating conception / pregnancy / young parenthood whilst in academia. I'd like to arrange an online session for researchers considering parenthood. If you're interested in sharing your experience, please get in touch 🙏
