In my latest piece for the Spectator, in advance of the Labour Party Conference, I take a look at Labour’s constitutional reform programme and ask where Andy Burnham is likely to go from here.

Well worth 10 minutes of your time. Rowling’s point about the response of the public sector to the FWS judgment is particularly striking.
I wrote a new piece about women’s rights and whether or not I want trans people dead. (Spoiler: I don’t)👇

Last week I wrote a Substack about national identity, Britishness & anti-Semitism.
Today’s piece forms a bit of an epilogue. It follows on from my attendance at a lecture by @AdamWagner1
at City University, which was disrupted by protesters.

Palestine activists disrupted a talk a human rights barrister gave this week about his work on freeing Israeli hostages of Hamas in Gaza. (Via @AlexanderHorne1's Substack)

Good by @AlexanderHorne1 on free speech & debate, prompted by disruption of @AdamWagner1 lecture that I also attended.
Notes AW comment that ‘usual NGOs & HR advocates did not have much appetite to act in this partic case..prob best if we do not speculate too much about why’

Adam had been invited to speak about his experience of representing the British families of the Gaza hostages. His talk was very moving. The protesters’ principal aim was to silence him. A depressing state of affairs

Who is entitled to define national identity?
My latest Substack post is a more personal piece which explores questions of Britishness, Zionism, history and belonging. You can read it here:

Depressing to see that, despite all the press coverage, 8,928 people went out to vote for a racist party in Holborn and St Pancras that is calling for the destruction of the world’s only Jewish state.
I guess Jews still don’t count.

Conference season is over and Labour has reintroduced some Brexit-related drama into our lives.
But instead of fixating on customs unions, or (re)joining the EU, perhaps we should ask Andy Burnham if he has considered the most obvious off-the-shelf option: the EEA?

There comes a stage at which a party moves from being a clown show to being dangerous.
Frankly, anyone voting for the Greens has always been endorsing a degree of idiocy - much like anyone voting for any other extreme party. But this really is a disgrace

For my first Substack post in October, I have lent into the ‘ephemera’ side of things. Rather than another essay on constitutional law, I thought readers might enjoy a restaurant-related diversion on a Saturday morning.
