Kristian is one of the best think tankers out there. The "liberty" movement, and the IEA, owes him a huge debt. On to bigger and better things!
I know this isn't LinkedIn, but nonetheless, some professional news. After 18 years, five books, three dozen papers and thousands of articles, presentations, podcasts, videos, media appearances etc etc – I am leaving the IEA in a few weeks' time. I am, however, neither joining Novara Media, nor the Guardian, nor SOAS. I am not starting a podcast with Gary Stevenson either. I'll continue to promote extremely uncool, cringey low-status opinions in other ways. Watch this space.

Out today!
Before you romanticize the past, read The Grim Old Days by Cato’s @chellivia. Unthinkable poverty. Bloodletting. Streets turned into open sewers. The preindustrial world was more gruesome than modern minds can fathom. Order now: ow.ly/NL8j50ZY9JW

Half a century ago, economist Julian Simon called human beings “the ultimate resource.” Today, AI can produce mathematical proofs and scientific predictions at astonishing speeds. Has Simon been proven wrong? Not quite. The bottleneck to innovation still lies with us.

A mother of four, Cato's @chellivia knows firsthand how expensive raising kids is. Government programs meant to help just pass the costs to other taxpayers. Spending more isn't the answer. So what is? Cato's Handbook on Affordability offers real solutions.

AIs can crunch statistical correlations, draw on what humans already know, and generate prescriptive knowledge far faster than any human mind can convert the output into something verified, trusted, and useful. In other words, we need more educated minds, not fewer.

Machines generate the outputs, but humans give them meaning...
Julian Simon said humans are “the ultimate resource.” 45 years later, AI breakthroughs dominate headlines weekly. Did AI just refute Simon? Me on why the answer is no:

Another way to think about Trump announcement today: If he increased US diesel imports from Canada by 4%, he would gain as much fuel as from this Russia deal. But the Canadians are global super-villains, so who wants to buy from them when you could enrich Putin instead?
