The 1992 title was the first ever won by a team based outside the United States, and Toronto got there by buying exactly what it needed and nothing it did not. Jack Morris and Dave Winfield signed as free agents before the season. David Cone arrived in an August trade. None of that is romantic and all of it worked, which is roughly how I feel about most championship rosters once you stop looking at them from a distance. Winfield had turned 41 three weeks before the World Series and hit the two-run double in the eleventh inning of Game 6 that won it. There is no version of roster building where you plan for that. You sign the veteran for the six months and hope he has one swing left in the last week of October. Morris went 21-6 in the regular season and then lost both of his World Series starts with an ERA over 8. Toronto won anyway. Juan Guzman was the best pitcher on this staff by ERA at 2.64, nearly a run and a half better than Morris, and hardly anybody brings his name up.
