Also, work that is demanding, time consuming & requiring advanced expertise, yet entirely unrewarded & not paid. Particularly ironic in "open access" journals, where they expect us to work for free *and* pay for publishing in them. With rising number of journals not sustainable! – at Edinburgh, Scotland

Really nice to have this short summary of the work Alex and I have been doing together, and the emerging language and law speciality at UTS
Dr @Alex_Grey_ & Dr @LauraSKh argue that the right to understand the law is often undermined by the mono-lingual norms and beliefs in our legal and regulatory processes. Read more: bit.ly/3SAos9W
Delighted to have won the Early Career Research Excellence in Publication “FLARE”

Interesting to hear origins of this book academic.oup.com/book/43917, progress in legal practice in recent decades & room for huge further improvements in recognising many more people's experiences of harms that are international crimes & should be prosecuted.

REALLY EXCEPTIONAL! I'm so excited for Laura & for the attention I hope it brings to her applied, meaningful humanities research on justice & multilingualism.
+ I implore others to amplify @LauraSKh's news: colleagues and uni media ppl don't always realise how important that is.

Does democracy prevent language endangerment?
This graph shows the relationship between how democratic a country is (based on Freedom House ratings) & the number of endangered languages it has (from ELCat).
More democratic countries do not have fewer endangered languages.

ALT The graph background is black with white plot lines and axis labels. Each data point on the chart is a circle colored as a different country's flag. The ten countries are: China, India, USA, Indonesia, Pakistan, Nigeria, Brazil, Bangladesh, Russia, and Mexico. Democracy does not appear to help prevent language endangerment.
