My collaborators and I recently published two new papers where we develop and apply a new "inverse" approach to identifying pollutants in river networks. I've written a plain language explainer here:

Great to see @Channel4News & @ecomaeve put together such an awesome explainer about Sewagemap, in the wider context of river pollution in the UK! Nice cameo from @ashsmith43 at the end too!
What’s the most polluted place to swim in the UK?
A new map shows which rivers and seas contain the most sewage around the country. The map was created by scientists at UCL - and it’s live - so you can check when the most recent sewage spill happened in your local area.
Last year activists wanted an ‘environmental emergency' to be declared - after research showed three quarters of all UK rivers pose a serious risk to human health.
Now, the government wants water companies to pay for the damage they caused, but there's a catch - the money is going to come from our water bills going up.
Founder of Windrush Against Sewage, Ash Smith, tells us the "privatised water industry is milking the bill-payer".

Still fancy a cold-water swim this morning? 🤢😡
sewagemap.co.uk now has national coverage,
with data from all water-companies! 📈
Check out their map to help keep you informed of #sewagepollution at your local swim spot.

Happy to share that sewagemap.co.uk now has national coverage! Whole country looking quite poop-y today... 1/3 #rivers #sewage #pollution
…but as ever Jonny and I have been stymied by most water companies limiting the data they release! 🙄🙄 2/3
All the source-code, and the live polluted river reach data is #opensource and #opendata at github.com/AlexLipp/sew... Suggestions, ideas and contributions very welcome!

It's available to pre-order, so it's real: my first book, Convention and the Individual in Medieval English Romance, will be out later this year! With thanks to @CanaryCaroline and @boydellbrewer for help at every stage — and for the beautiful cover!

'We need to rebuild public trust in our river – and sewer – networks.'
A new UK law is forcing water companies to make pollution data readily accessible to the general public - but it doesn’t go far enough, writes @AlexGLipp ⬇️

We welcome more transparency, but there is a lot more to it as explained in this piece by @conversationuk .

I'm in The Conversation discussing the new release of nationwide sewage spill data in the wider context of open data, open models and environmental transparency. 1/n

So, if we want to rebuild trust in our rivers, open data & models are a good place to start 8/8

Fred’s passing is a sad event, but also a chance to reflect on just how recently dramatic leaps forward in our understanding of the Earth took place.
