Your reputation is being built in rooms you’re not in.
How you treat people.
How prepared you are.
Whether you keep your word.
How you handle losing.
How you treat your staff.
How you act when you don’t get what you want.
The title is cool... it’s also just “Head Coach.”
In the job description “Mindset and Culture” is 30% of the key responsibilities. The first item listed is “Data Analytics (30%).
How can you serve in a Director level position, and 70% of your focus is elsewhere? I love unique titles, they help create empowerment and ownership. This does the opposite, it’s just more fake titles. (Again, it’s an awesome job/role).
[Directing] a basketball program’s “Mindset and Culture” has to come from the Head Coach/CEO.
If it’s 100% of their job, and they’re in lock step with the HC, perfect. If it’s only 30% of the job, it can’t be their title. It’s illogical. Some roles cover many areas, some roles specialize in one area. Just make the title and the role accurate.
Please stop giving out fake titles. It creates less ownership, not more.

Coaches have plenty of people they can talk to, but far fewer people they can be completely honest with.
Every day you're surrounded by your assistant coaches, administrators, executives, staff, and players.
You're constantly communicating, but very few of those conversations are places where you can truly reveal what's going on beneath the surface.
For many, their person becomes their spouse. And while that's a gift, that relationship wasn't meant to carry the full weight of leadership.
Sometimes they don't fully understand the unique demands of your role. Other times, they simply want you to come home as their husband, wife, mom, or dad, not the coach still carrying the last game or the conversation that didn't go the way you hoped.
Every leader deserves a place and a person where they can take the mask off.
If you've been carrying more than you've had space to process, send me a DM.
Even if we never work together, I'd be happy to share some resources or point you in a direction that might help.

Our mission is simple— “Empower leaders to empower those they lead, and build winning teams.”
Thank you JG3 for your trust, belief, and embodiment of “Into The Storm.”

I met @JohnGriffinIII in 2020, and what could have been a 10 minute phone call lasted well over an hour.
In life, you’ll meet people that make you say to yourself, “I really would like to help them.”
Not because of what it could do for you or how it might change your career, but because they simply care; they give a shit.
Identity leaves clues… gather evidence.
Six years later, I’m proud to call John a mentor and a close friend. It’s always about the people.
I’ve gotten to know JG3 the last half decade. Wether it’s beating Kansas in the NCAA tournament in 2005, experiencing the trials and tribulations of being a mid-major head coach, or doing his best to not miss a little league practice, the guy knows how to run head first “Into The Storm.”
Bucknell is lucky to have you leading your Alma mater. Thank you for your positive impact on me and the team @under4creative

One of the best leaders I’ve ever been around. And I think leadership “mostly boils down to being a great person” and man is he that. I love this dude.
Something about a ball coach from the great state of West Virginia
Navy head coach Jon Perry calls a team meeting to inform Austin Benigni that he has won the 2026 Lou Henson award. But Coach Perry is surprised to learn that he has won the Hugh Durham National Coach of the Year. @NavyAthletics @NavyBasketball @PatriotLeague #2026CIAwards

Coming soon⏳
Can we just call it Coaching Staff of the Year?
Would save a lot of head coaches time from having to write the obligatory “this is a staff award” post.
