If you believed in a non-zero probability of an apocalyptic or wartime event taking place in your lifetime and you could hedge with less than 0.001% of your disposable income we would all be doing it

Yes. Hoffman estimated 50%+ of Silicon Valley billionaires hold "apocalypse insurance." Zuckerberg has a large underground shelter on his Hawaii ranch (he calls it a basement) with self-sufficiency features. Thiel owns NZ land and planned a compound. Altman stockpiles guns, gold and supplies, plus reinforced basements and remote land. They hedge known risks—pandemics, nuclear threats, unrest, tech disruption—with extreme wealth-enabled prep, not secret knowledge.

Is this retardmaxxing?
I couldn't find my wallet all weekend. After spending 2 days looking all over the house, I asked claude "is there research on how to find a lost item" There is! Most lost items are ~2 feet from where you think they were lost. That's the "eureka zone" So I spent an hour digging around this messy part of my closet. All within a few feet of where I thought I lost it. Had to move furniture, etc. FOUND IT. Trivial but amazing.

what's the best granola alternative that runs on omarchy?

i've been using @OmarcyMac for the last few days and really enjoying it. it's a learning curve, there's some muscle memory and mental model of how your computer is set up that requires unlearning - in a way that process itself is enjoyable. actually using the os has also been great, it's only what i need. i don't get the sense that there are a multitude of background processes hogging up resources and slowing my mac down. the experience is very snappy and light. it's a real breath of fresh air. i created 2 plugins which was amazinng - one to control my home thermostat and one that was simply a key binding to toggle airpods on/off (maybe this isn't actually plugin). there were also some optimisation issues with using airpods - youtube in chrome kept freezing if i switched audio output. i prompted opus 5.5 and the issue was resolved in 5-10 mins. its actually nuts to be moulding your os to fit your needs and being able to fix things that aren't quite right for you. most of my work is shopify design + dev , so a lot of back and forth with clients (slack), project management (basecamp), and agents for custom dev (mostly cursor). i've started running a couple of client projects on omarchy and it's been pretty good. it's certainly been much faster. right now my only reservations are - im still very entrenched in mac os and when i have busy weeks (aka this week), i'm seeking the comfort and reliance on the toolset that i know best. its not better but i know it better. there are a few apps that i dont have on omarchy which i use a lot on mac, namely apple music and granola. im sure there are exisitng apps/plugins, or that i can just prompt one into existence. but right now i just need to stick to what i know. my takeaway from this is is that the more i use omarchy the more it will fit my specific needs - so there's a degree of initial setup, figuring out exactly what i need, and tailoring the os to fit. overall it's super cool, i'm really enjoying it and look forward to seeing how it continues developing. 💚💚💚

97.5% LTV seems like a lot of risk to take on when boomer era capital growth is a thing of the past. here's how i think it plays out: 1. first time buyers jump at this opportunity, 97.5% mortgage sounds like free money when you haven't had the life experience of taking on a significant amount of debt. 2. this scheme only applies to new build homes. so developers of new build homes now have more demand - they can build more homes. the faster these homes can be designed, built, and sold, the better the return is for the developer. the incentives are terrible for the home owner - you get something that was chucked together on cheap land (aka shit location), with poor quality materials, and built in a rush, with every corner guaranteed to be cut. it's for first time buyers after all - what do they know? they're just pumped to be getting on the property ladder. 3. fast forward 10 years. any slight hiccup in the economy or housing market and your first time buyers are now in negative equity. even if they're not, you have huge mortgage payments because you have huge leverage, and you're still paying mostly interest - your financial position is entirely dictated by market conditions where interest rate fluctuations can wipe you out. 4. the developers btw in the meantime made a quick buck and likely bankrupted their shell cos so that they couldn't be chased for all the red tape that they failed to stick to. these are probably the only true beneficiaries of this scheme. 5. "but my house will go up in value. I'll be able to remortgage, rent, or sell it on". the price of a property is the value of the land plus the building that sits on that land. the bricks and paint don't get any more valuable with time, they deteriorate, you have to replace them, things break (this is even more true when you've bought a cheap new build). boomers enjoyed huge capital growth because the value of the LAND increased, not because the building was somehow worth more. look at where cheap new builds are situated - along the sides of motorways and A roads. ask yourself whether that location is going to be more valuable in 10/20/50 years time. tldr; we're about to see a bunch of credit put into the system to finance the building of a bunch of crappy assets in the name of box ticking.
🚨 BREAKING: Andy Burnham will announce a new "Help to Buy" scheme next week Called "Your First Home", it will allow young people to buy their first home with a deposit of just 2.5%

slop motion is the latest terminology i love that i didn't know i needed
Hot take: the Claude demos flooding the TL are both pretty and useless. It's all SLOP motion: ❌ Generic ❌ No storytelling ❌ And absolutely won't convert I built a skill that fixes all three. Opus 5.5 demo videos that sell, not just look good.

Spending time on Reddit wires your brain for skepticism, pessimism, whinging, and general complacency. Treat information like nutrition for the brain
For every reddit doomer, there's a hundred quiet bloomers. Online discourse is dominated by malcontents and their neuroses. But the real world is full of people leaning into the future with optimism. It's fair to have butterflies, fair to feel anxious, but don't you dare doom 🌷

@basecamp @jorgemanru 🐞 bug (i think?) - I created a new group in a to-do list. I'm not able to drag existing to-do items into this new group whilst it's empty. once I've created a new to-do in that group i'm able to then drag existing to-dos in

seems that whilst empty, a group can't have existing items added to it?
