Lots of peeps are missing the point:
- AI-generated code is genAI
- LLMs are trained on existing work, usually without consent or compensation
- LLMs are theft
When you say "it's OK when it's code, bc it's just a utility", it shows that the theft argument was just a virtuesignal

We have known this for actual years, but for some reason we always act like info learned about covid is a shocking new discovery and not further confirmation of long known facts. Maybe so we don’t have to do the 🎃 scary 🎃 thing and filter the fucking air.

TBH my main problem with the "is Claude sentient" thing is that the rabbi was right. I don't think Claude is or even can be sentient. But if I had any doubts & worked at Anthropic, I'd view my work as possibly creating a slave class of sentient beings, which is obviously immoral
I've avoided critiquing since I have a lot of friends at Anthropic, but the anthropomorphization of Claude is dangerous. Roughly, it's a large transformer with a sophisticated training set (pre, mid, post/RL) that is extensively trained in RL "game worlds" mimicking useful real world situations. In some fundamental sense it's not that different from say AlphaGo except for the fact the enormous number of parameters means it can play a lot of different games (e.g., the game of maximizing human response). This is a very neat technology but treating it like some sorcerous creation is dangerous. I don't believe Anthropic folks are cynics. I think a lot of them genuinely believe this is a recipe to create a sentient being. If this is in fact true (which I question heavily), open scientific enquiry will reduce suffering. Sunlight cleans shadows. The secrecy and cloak and dagger is harmful to society.

"A lot of people that have this illness that I've spoken to have said to me 'I don't get believed, people think I'm lazy'. I've never experienced one person that doesn't believe me and that's because, why would an athlete just suddenly stop after 20 years?"
Very true.

Dear Friends, there is no “may be” here.
Covid also fuses our neurons.
And the processes that we hear are only occurring in those mysterious LongCovid bodies are happening in everyone after enough Covid infections. Good luck & Godspeed. sciencealert.com/brain-scans…

“after hundreds of years doing nothing” is outrageously cretinous - they invented the entirety of modern algebra, in part guided by that problem! they came up with rings and ideals etc as part of this program. which plays a large role computer BS, so how about a little gratitude!

After hundreds of years by someone who worked in secrecy? I strongly think that kind of culture is part of the reason we don't see any progress on the most important questions. That way of doing math must end. Being comfortable taking hundreds of years doing nothing isn't the way

Mind you, coding is art. Learning how to manipulate a system to do what you need to, that's ART. It's also knowledge being lost

oh so you mean that once you get sick your immune system doesn't always clear it? so i can "feel better" but a virus can persist hidden in tissues and then months later cause problems?
University of Pennsylvania researchers studied over 300 people and found 40% of Long COVID samples had elevated SARS-CoV-2-specific CD8 T cell activation, with signs of exhaustion and reduced function.
This supports persistent viral antigen stimulation.

Ecocide looks like this
Out of roughly 2 million olive trees in Gaza before October 2023, only 150,000 trees remain standing. This is a loss of roughly 85% to 90% of the region's olive groves.
Ecocide is the deliberate, widespread destruction of natural ecosystems necessary to sustain human life. Many experts would agree that Israel's systematic destruction of Palestinian farmlands, aquifers, and trees would qualify as ecocide.
Under international humanitarian law including the Geneva Conventions, any objects indispensable to the survival of the civilian population like agricultural areas are granted special protections during conflict.
Olive oil and table olives are crucial to Gaza's local agricultural economy, but in Palestinian culture, olive trees are much more than just a commodity. They are symbols of continuity, resilience, and attachment to the soil. Many groves are hundreds of years old and passed down through generations.
Unlike annual crops like tomatoes or cucumbers that can be replanted and harvested in a single season, mature olive trees represent decades of invested capital. Losing them wipes out a reliable source of income for thousands of families, leaving them dependent on foreign aid.
