A prayer book opens with the twelve zodiac signs. The first twelve pages of this psalter, produced in England around 1170, form a calendar, and each month's page features that month's zodiac sign. Yet the Church's most influential thinkers had opposed the practice of reading one's fate from the stars centuries earlier.
