But wouldn't AIs avoiding detection effectively mean the same as their doing nothing? Then avoiding detection doesn't sound so bad.

the bad case is one where the swarm avoids detection while growing in strength, only revealing itself (and grabbing resources) once it's beyond humanity's capacity to stop it.

A swarm with enough strength to take over the world hass to be rather large. It's possible for an electricity utility to detect the operation of a washing machine in a household's electricity usage. Shouldn't we be able to detect a large rogue swarm long before it does harm?
