A fuel pot got stuck inside India's Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam. The cause was a steel rail nobody could see.
Fuel goes into a transfer pot that rides up an inclined track submerged in liquid sodium. The pot stopped about 950 mm short of its lowest position. Sodium is opaque, so no camera could look.
IGCAR built an ultrasonic scanner in-house: a 13.8 m tube with 4 sodium-proof transducers at its tip. After rehearsing in a spare unit filled with water, they scanned the mechanism inside the sodium and built a 3D picture.
One of the two 31-degree tilting rails had come off its brackets. BARC says that needs all 16 fixing bolts to have failed.
The rail had to come out without draining the sodium.
BARC designed a remote machine of 300+ precision parts, run from the reactor top by mechanical shafts. 205 drawings were released in sequence, and BARC's Central Workshop built it in 55 days.
Concept to deployment took 4.5 months.
It was rehearsed on a full-scale mock-up at BHAVINI. On 6 September 2025 the machine pulled the rail out on the very 1st attempt, with the sodium still in place and the core at 180°C. Fuel loading then resumed through a separate route.
The machine was rehearsed in water. It did the job blind, inside sodium.
Bharat is rising. 🙏🙏
P.S. Sodium is the liquid-metal coolant in a fast reactor. It is opaque, so nobody can see inside it.

we didn’t take him seriously until it happened
We discovered a sophisticated recording device that was hidden inside one of our offices. We used our models to understand the device and where it had come from, identifying that a specific employee had planted it a few days earlier. We referred the matter to the FBI, and we’re grateful to the agents and prosecutors who moved quickly to make an arrest. The FBI’s investigation is ongoing and we will continue to support their work.
At this time, we have no indications of this individual inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer data. The employee was terminated.
We take protecting our technology, data, and people seriously, and as a matter of national importance. Our security program is designed to protect against a wide range of threat actors, from insider risks to cybercriminals to nation states, and this case is an example of how AI can help address these sophisticated security threats.
Just found out about a draft for Happy Eyeballs algorithm v3 which expands connection racing from just choosing between IPv4 and IPv6 addresses to also racing modern transport and application protocols like QUIC and HTTP/3. Seems interesting.

#WATCH | Indian Coast Guard (ICG) successfully averted a major incident at sea, rescuing a distressed foreign chemical tanker, MT Seagull 9, approximately 37 nautical miles East-South-East of Paradip, Odisha.
The Belize-flagged vessel, carrying 9,000 Metric Tonnes of palm oil with 23 crew members onboard, issued an urgent distress call at about 0730 hrs on 27 Sep 2026 following main engine failure and rapid ballast tank flooding, which caused the ship to tilt dangerously.
Responding swiftly, ICGS Vishwast was immediately dispatched to the scene. Demonstrating high operational readiness, a specialist ICG Damage Control Team boarded the unstable vessel under challenging conditions. Deploying submersible de-flooding pumps and advanced damage-control equipment, the team swiftly arrested the leakage, blanked two damaged seawater pipelines, and contained a third fractured line.
To reinforce the operations, the Indian Coast Guard has also diverted a Pollution Control Vessel (PCV) and an additional Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) to the location for augmented pollution response and continuous, round-the-clock monitoring of the situation.
Through seamless coordination between ICGS Vishwast's specialized team and the vessel's crew, concurrent cargo transfer and de-flooding operations were executed, effectively stabilizing the tanker and eliminating the threat of capsizing.
Simultaneously, ICG Dornier aircraft launched from Bhubaneswar for real-time aerial surveillance. A minor palm-oil sheen initially observed near the vessel on 27 Sep was confirmed fully dissipated during follow-up aerial sorties on 28 Sep. Strict pollution-response protocols remain active to safeguard the marine ecosystem.
In a synchronized multi-agency effort, Paradip Port Authority tug Dolphin took the stabilized MT Seagull 9 under tow towards the anchorage area off Paradip. Main engine repairs are currently underway with assistance from ICGS Vishwast’s technical team.
ICGS Vishwast, alongside the deployed specialized assets, remains on scene maintaining an active sentinel watch and providing continuous operational support.

Getting independent IP address space is only the beginning. Running it is the real work.
At @apnic’s #APNIC62, I gave a lightning talk on “The Solo Operator’s Administrative Reality”—what it actually takes to operate your own ASN and Internet number resources as a solo network operator.
APNIC/RIR fees and budgeting. IPv4 and IPv6. BGP operations. IPTTTH. DDoS and prefix withdrawals. WHOIS and privacy. Incident response. Host/device responsibility. Legal liability.
Independent IP resources. Personal responsibility.

Flight acceptance hot test of CE20 cryogenic engine earmarked for the C32 upper stage of upcoming LVM3 mission at uprated thrust conditions of 220kN is successfully carried out at ISRO Propulsion Complex, Mahendragiri on September 09, 2026.
Performance of the LOX Tank Pressurization Module (LTPM) meant for the C32 stages for Gaganyaan missions was also successfully demonstrated in this test.

I got to work with these exfil methods in 2012 to 2014 with varied success
Researchers pulled a 256-bit encryption key out of a device by filming its power LED.
The status light on a smart card reader flickers in sync with the chip's power draw, and that power draw leaks the key. They recovered a full ECDSA key from 16 meters away, through a window, using a hijacked security camera. No malware, no contact, just video of a status light.
The trick: a camera's rolling shutter turns 60 frames per second into 60,000 brightness samples per second.
The light that tells you a device is on tells an attacker what it is computing.
