La cuestión es que trabajar como perro y aún así no poder vivir con dignidad también es un tipo de violencia, diaria e inescapable.

New on my Substack, a little follow-up to my article in @thenation yesterday:
"This is the beginning of a sea change in American politics; the first steps in a much-needed, long-time-coming transformation in how U.S. leaders talk about Puerto Rico’s status."

The US has ruled Puerto Rico for longer than the Britain Raj.
As Ghandi was winning independence, Puerto Ricans were browbeaten into accepting only limited self government.
But even that has now been replaced by direct rule - stirring support for independence again, as @AlbertoMedinaPR explains in his @thenation piece.
Note: By "browbeaten", I mean they were threatened with losing their war pensions and with economic disaster, while advocates of independence were imprisoned using draconian laws made in America and targeted for covert disruption by the FBI. My book has the details!
More and more progressives are backing Puerto Rican independence—and it's about time, writes @AlbertoMedinaPR. thenation.com/article/world/…

To steal from one of my readers. Zelda and GTA are not ‘the barbenheimer of games’.
They’re the Ocarina of Crime.

Puerto Rico's independence party (PIP) was formed in 1946 just as the US was sharpening the repressive tools of McCarthyism. Everyone opposed to colonialism was targeted as Washington tightened its grip on its vital military asset.
But a nation's aspirations can't be crushed. Today, PIP is enjoying a surge in support as it celebrates its 80th anniversary.
The status that masqueraded as 'free association' was exposed as a sham in 2016 when Washington used the colony's debt crisis to impose a fiscal board to control its finances. Puerto Rico was not even given the opportunity to file for bankruptcy protection, as a US city would.
The word ‘debt’ is itself a misnomer. US politicians talk of Puerto Rico like it's a burden but colonial powers do not keep their possessions out of charity. It has served as a major US military base and test bed for all manner of nasty weapons. Its economy has been shaped for the coloniser's purposes, first as a supplier of sugar and later as a low-tax, cheap labour producer of pharmaceuticals and electrical goods. Recent years have seen its prime Caribbean coastal land plundered for development, pricing Puerto Ricans out of their own communities.
The US has tried to destroy Puerto Rico's independence movement through repression and covert action for decades - but it has failed.
Congratulations to PIP on its 80th anniversary.
