Quantum physics suggests our universe may be exactly periodic, meaning every moment of your life has already happened and will repeat forever. For decades, cosmologists have dealt with the deeply unsettling Boltzmann Brain paradox. In standard models of an eternal universe, the cosmos eventually spends unimaginable stretches of time in a dead, high-entropy state of thermal equilibrium. Under these conditions, random quantum fluctuations are statistically far more likely to spontaneously assemble a single, isolated conscious brain with false memories than they are to evolve an entire structured universe filled with galaxies and real observers. This means everything you remember could have been created by absolute chance a split second ago. To address this dilemma, theoretical physicist Sean Carroll and his co-researchers Nadiia Diachenko and Saakshi Dulani proposed a mathematical model where the universe’s history is exactly periodic rather than infinite and chaotic. Published in mid-2026, their theory relies on a loophole in quantum mechanics. By assuming the universe is a finite-dimensional quantum system and carefully calibrating its energy states, the researchers showed that the cosmos can move cleanly from a low-entropy Big Bang to a Big Crunch, and back again, without ever drifting into the chaotic equilibrium that produces Boltzmann Brains. If this model reflects our actual reality, cosmic history is a closed loop that returns precisely to its starting quantum state. This would mean that every conversation you have, every decision you make, and every memory you hold dear has already occurred an infinite number of times in the past, and is destined to repeat for eternity.
