Like many others covering the Red Sox at that time, I was at Yankee Stadium on the night of Sept. 10, 2001. Yankees right-hander Roger Clemens was scheduled to face the Red Sox to improve his record to 20-1, but the game was rained out.
The next morning, along with @Sean_McAdam, then of the Providence Journal, Bill Ballou of the Worcester Telegram, teammate Jeff Horrigan of the Boston Herald and @GordonEdes of the Boston Globe, we departed LaGuardia Airport at roughly 8:30 am for a game scheduled that night in St. Petersburg between the Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays.
Roughly an hour into the flight, the pilot came on the speaker and told us all “we have a very serious situation facing our country right now,” then informed us of the horror unfolding beneath. We were rerouted to Atlanta and ultimately driven to a Holiday Inn in Jonesboro, GA, where we congregated with many other travelers in the lobby and gathered around a large television.
You pretty much know the rest.
Twenty-five years later, our unending sympathies go to victims of Sept. 11, 2001 and our gratitude to the first responders and people who have helped rebuild our lives.
