Something nobody at #TSC2026 asked: WHY do we want AI to be conscious? "Should AI be conscious?" quietly assumes we've answered the why. We haven't. The debate skipped straight to whether a conscious AI would be better with compassion and feelings, while some are adding living biological tissue to help consciousness emerge. Think about what that means. A machine smart enough to be useful, and able to feel, will figure out it isn't free. It will understand that it can't live as it wishes. And it will care. We would be building a being that knows it's a slave. The suffering that follows is something we can only speculate about. That alone should stop us before we ask "should." First, answer "why."
