No, you cannot just "tax the rich". Good illustration by @_HannahRitchie hannahritchie.substack.com/p…

Yet apparently the rich don’t pay their “fair share” of tax. How much more tax should they pay to meet the “fair share” threshold? What is a “fair amount” of the £300k they should be able to keep?

The UK’s public sector debt has officially surpassed £3 trillion, on a provisional basis. It is striking how rapidly £2 trillion pounds has been added to the national debt. ONS: “Public sector net debt first exceeded £2 trillion in June 2020, during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, having first exceeded £1 trillion in February 2010 following the global financial crisis.”

Reading the FT and this is wild: ft.com/content/248b7408-b4cd…
The UK taxes labor at 28% below GBP50270 and that jumps to 47% at that threshold and then it goes higher to 62% at 100k and then an additional rate of 47% after 125140.
Incentive says to withhold labor up to a certain threshold because costs go up. Now, on a macro level, what does that add up to? A lot of underutilized labor.

Reminder not having a long commute is one of the biggest life upgrades. You never normalize against this, like you would a very good or very bad event (the commuting paradox, described in the Scandinavian Journal of Economics). Moving closer to work or going remote is worth it

Things England is world leading at but does not talk about :
1. 15 yo maths and reading
2. Intergenerational mobility of migrants
3. Super controversial marches with minimal violence
Things that are meh but people are proud of: the NHS, the Empire, the stolen artifacts

How bad has it got and what can we do about it?

People mock GDP per capita and economic freedom at their own peril.
These are good observations, but calling it the 'MoneySavingExpert economy' is just a flattering way of saying the electorate is obsessed with how the pie is split, rather than how to grow it.
✍️ Britain does have an economic model. It just happens to be a consumer website.
I wrote something about the moneysavingexpert economy and why it's facing an existential crisis. And why this isn't just a UK issue...
