Viral Acharya, one of the world's finest financial economists was RBI Deputy Governor during 2017-19, and left office six months before his tenure expired.
He has now devastatingly exposed how the Modi Govt pressurised the RBI to transfer Rs 2-3 lakh crores from its account to the Union government in the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
To its everlasting credit, the RBI resisted and set up a Committee to establish a formula for such transfers. In 2022-23 some Rs 87,500 crore was transferred from the RBI to the Union Govt. Acharya may, however, have become the victim for his uncompromising stance.
This is professionalism of the highest order, which hopefully will not be compromised in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The Editors Guild of India sent a 3 member fact finding team to Manipur. It’s report was critical of the state govt handling of the ethnic violence and also critical of the coverage by a large section of the state media. There can always be legitimate disagreements over contents of report but to file a police case against the fact finding team and the EGI president is a brazen misuse of police powers. This is India, NOT China: browbeating media into submission is injurious to health of Indian democracy.
