Some 7,000 people gathered at Jantar Mantar today from morning to evening. Leaders of various social and political movements spoke in support. A clear indication of how effective this movement is can be judged from the number of trolls in the comments below. Over the years I’ve seen that this number is directly proportional to the impact. The energy density Ethanol is 26.8 MJ/kg, whereas Petrol is 46.4 MJ/kg. Which means theoretically, you need 1.74 litres of Ethanol to travel the same distance as with one litre of Petrol. If you think that mileage is going to be same with Ethanol and Petrol, you are mathematically unfit to stay in your position as Petroleum Minister. A school kid will do a better job than you.
You said "There is room for electric vehicles, biofuel blended vehicles, hybrid and CNG vehicles."
But there is room for Petrol vehicles. Provide us pure unleaded Petrol which was available before the greedy and uneducated lot took over India in 2014.
Just provide us pure Petrol first instead of Gadkari's alcohol. It's our right.

This is not a result of merely Ethanol blend. Petrol and Ethanol should ideally mix well together.
The phenomenon we see in the picture below is result of water absorption by the Ethanol leading to phase separation.
The entire storage, transport and dispensation of E20 petrol should ensure there is no moisture which can contaminate the fuel leading to phase separation.
My guess is the current mechanisms we have to distribute normal petrol does not have these safeguards. Petrol being hydrophobic will not absorb any moisture.
While the entire focus is on E20 compatibility of vehicles, the Government has not assessed whether the entire supply chain is equipped to handle E20 distribution without any water contamination.

Nitin Gadkari’s blind obsession with E20 fuel blending is another example of headline-driven policymaking replacing evidence-based governance.

DISH inspected this factory in Dec 2025. Flagged it. Filed a chargesheet. Case never listed. Factory kept running.
This was not a tragedy. It was avoidable.
