He had pericarditis. Inflammation around the heart. Canberra Hospital, 19 September. They said he was coming good. Eating. Walking the ward. In good spirits. Discharge was being talked about.
Five days later he was gone.
Fourteen. A school camp. A heart. And the write-up still reaches for “tragic” like this is weather.
It isn’t weather. Children are having cardiac arrests and the language has already been softened so nobody has to flinch. Rare. Unexpected. In good spirits, then dead.
A boy that age should not know what pericarditis is. A ward should not be planning his discharge on a Monday and his funeral by the weekend.
They normalised it. That’s the part that should make you angry. Not the adjective. The shrug.
