How does a 12-meter automated city bus perceive its surroundings?
The MAN Lion’s City 12 E, tested as part of the #MINGA research project and automated by ADASTEC’s SAE Level-4 automated driving software platform, uses a combination of LiDARs, radars and cameras positioned around the vehicle to continuously perceive its surroundings.
Working together across different ranges and fields of view, these sensors create a comprehensive view of the environment, enabling the automated driving system to detect, and track objects, understand road users and infrastructure, and support safe driving decisions in complex urban traffic.
A closer look at the sensor coverage behind automated public transport.

Munich is now on the road with automated public transport.
The MAN Lion’s City 12 E, automated by ADASTEC’s automated driving software platform, has entered public road testing on Munich’s Route 178 as part of the MINGA project.
Following extensive testing and the required regulatory procedures, including technical inspections by TÜV and the operating permit granted by the federal authority for road traffic, Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA), under the AFGBV framework, the project is now moving from controlled validation into real urban traffic.
Together with MAN Truck & Bus and MVG, we are taking another important step toward everyday automated public transport by bringing together vehicle integration, automated driving technology, operational expertise and regulatory readiness.
The next phase, planned for November, will bring selected test users on board as operations continue under real world public transport conditions.
From engineering and validation to public road operation, this is how automated public transport moves forward.

ADASTEC is one of 30 partners in the newly launched #MILA.mobility consortium, a nationwide German research and development initiative focused on integrating automated mobility into existing public transport systems.
Led by Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe, MILA.mobility is developing and testing an open, manufacturer-neutral platform that connects automated vehicles with control centres, dispatching, booking and infrastructure systems. The goal is to move beyond isolated solutions and create interfaces, standards and operating approaches that can be transferred across operators, regions and vehicle providers.
As part of the consortium, ADASTEC brings its experience in SAE Level-4 automated public transport and the deployment of flowride.ai on full-size buses. For automated mobility to scale beyond individual deployments, vehicles and the wider public transport ecosystem need to work together reliably across different systems and providers.
Over the next 44 months, MILA.mobility will move from virtual testing to validation across five test fields in Germany, helping establish a common technical foundation for automated public transport at scale.
Scaling automated public transport requires more than automated vehicles. It requires an ecosystem that can work together.
Stay tuned for more from MILA.mobility and ADASTEC’s contribution to the project.
