How does an intern end up buying thousands of dollars in gift cards for a scammer? It often starts with an email that looks like it came from their boss. We sat down with M.K. Palmore, who spent 22 years at the FBI before holding cybersecurity leadership roles at Palo Alto Networks and Google Cloud, to talk about how AI is changing business email compromise. Palmore says bad writing used to be one of the easiest tells. Now, LLMs can clean up an attacker's writing in seconds, while public information from LinkedIn helps make the message personal and convincing. When the writing no longer gives the scam away, Palmore says to focus on the request itself. If someone is asking you to bypass a normal company process, verify it another way before you act. Adaptive Co-Founder and CPO Andrew Jones spoke with the @FinancialTimes about a strange new problem for security teams. AI can now find vulnerabilities faster than companies can fix them. The FCA is warning that this could become especially difficult for financial firms, where complex systems can make it harder to validate, prioritize, and fix vulnerabilities quickly. To Andrew, it’s no surprise: “This is what happens every time detection technology leaps ahead of the process built to act on it: alerts start multiplying faster than any team can work through them.” For now, Andrew says the answer isn't to slow down detection. It's to make sure the response side can keep up, with the people and systems needed to quickly determine which vulnerabilities are actually dangerous and business-critical. Lake City Bank cut its phishing failure rate by 87% in just a few months, while making its phishing tests harder. The $7 billion community bank was seeing phishing attacks evolve quickly. Employees weren't just facing poorly written emails asking for money anymore. AI-powered impersonation, synthetic voice, and increasingly sophisticated social engineering were raising the bar.
