It kind of shows that many people have a frail grasp on the original Bond character and looks as written by Ian Fleming in the original novels. I think Callum Turner would make an excellent fit. Here's why: Bond needs a particular combination of characteristics: sophistication without affectation, confidence without arrogance, and an underlying suggestion that his charm conceals something considerably less pleasant. Turner has an effortless, slightly detached quality. He can appear charming while remaining emotionally difficult to read. To those calling Callum Turner a lousy actor; that is lazy criticism. Watch "Masters of the Air" or "The Capture" before making that judgement. He's demonstrated charisma, dramatic ability, emotional subtlety and screen presence. More importantly, Bond doesn't require an actor who constantly shows off his range. He needs someone who can convey intelligence, sophistication, wit, authority and menace without trying too hard. Acting isn't about disappearing into every role; it's about making the character believable. Turner has the tools to do that. The deciding factor is my interpretation of Fleming's character. Bond isn't simply a tough secret agent who happens to wear expensive suits. He's an intelligent, cultivated, occasionally unpleasant and emotionally guarded man whose sophistication and ruthlessness coexist rather than contradict each other. Turner, I suspect, could make us believe in 007 himself. And after five films devoted increasingly to deconstructing James Bond, perhaps it's time to reconstruct him.
