Suck it up, California.
Newsom has 24 taxpayer-funded employees on his official communications team who are collectively paid at least $2.6 million a year.

This is about as fiery as @EytanWallace, the nicest guy in the California press corps, gets. Which tells you something!
I want to be clear: I would have preferred not to make this video. I am sharing it to explain my upcoming coverage of the race for California state controller, including my efforts to interview incumbent Malia Cohen (D-CA) and why my candidate interview coverage of this office will feature only her challenger, Herb Morgan (R-CA).
I would have preferred to produce a piece giving both candidates equal time. Those are journalistic values that guide me every day. After weeks of outreach and back-and-forth with Cohen’s team, a Zoom interview was scheduled, then abruptly canceled by her team. I was told she had no availability to reschedule before the election.
Her team said I could submit written questions for Cohen to answer in writing. I respectfully declined because I wanted voters to hear directly from her on camera, with the opportunity for follow-up questions.
I told her team multiple times I wanted to ensure voters heard her side, her priorities, and answer why she deserves a second term in office. I made every effort to make that happen.
Fairness is always my priority. My goal was to give both candidates the same opportunity to discuss their records, answer meaningful and tough questions, and speak directly to voters. I regret that I could not make that happen, but voters deserve transparency about the process.

This is a strange story. California woman finds a man, apparently drunk, sleeping on her front lawn early in the morning, sends her father out to move him. The man wakes up & allegedly assaults the father, who shoots him
Turns out the man is off-duty ICE agent David Gonzalez
#BREAKING An ICE agent is in custody at a local hospital after police say he was shot after assaulting an elderly man and his daughter at a home in Fresno.

California state govt's largest union, @SEIU1000, announced its members authorized a strike that could take place in Newsom's last months in office. I see people wearing "strike ready" shirts when I drop off my kids at their schools.
The first one was because of COVID. The second round ... well ... I'm not sure that CA budget crisis had to happen. It was a hangover from the extremely flush post-COVID budgets.

Opinion: Liberal Democrats gutted California’s CARE court, so homeless addicts just say ‘no'

Must read.
ICYMI This is Day 1 of Tom Philp's outstanding series about a homeless woman in Sacramento whose sad plight lays bare why California is failing on homelessness. This is heroic journalism that is becoming more endangered every day.

California police and fire unions came close to enhancing retirement benefits for their members, but the memory of California's pension crisis proved too much for Gov. Newsom.
He just vetoed #AB1383.
The bill would have let first responders retire at 55 rather than 57 and opened the door to more lucrative retirement formulas. It sailed through the Legislature with overwhelming and bipartisan support.
Here's our story. I wouldn't be surprised to see public safety unions make another run at something like this next year. calmatters.org/politics/2026…
But cities and counties lobbied against the measure, and they had an ear from Newsom. Newsom, after all, was a mayor during the Great Recession and he supported pension reform back then.
You probably saw this one coming. Gov. Newsom vetoed the bill, #AB1729, that would have encouraged more flexibility for remote work in California state government. Maybe the next governor will go with three days a week in office.
The veto comes as Local 1000 is asking its members to authorize a strike over pay and remote work.

Newsom wrote “in-person collaboration is an essential part of a productive and effective workplace.”
“This measure, by limiting departmental flexibility and encouraging telework to be the default work arrangement, takes the state’s telework policy in the wrong direction."

I kept an ear on the CalPERS board meeting this week and heard the conversation on AI jump from profit to p(doom).
It's fallout from Jacob Coxon's resignation and warning about AI companies "gambling with our lives."
CalPERS board President Theresa Taylor urged her colleagues to consider weighing in with a statement on risks.
"This is humanity," she said.
Here's a quick recap of the discussion calmatters.org/economy/2026/…
