Fishlake and Sykehouse Actions for Climate Change

Please say no to pesticides and herbicides. Cocktails of these chemicals in fields, gardens, parks, verges and community spaces are poisoning wildlife including bees, birds, hedgehogs, butterflies, beetles, frogs, damselflies. They pollute our rivers. Let's give nature a chance.

Around 66% of the UK's traditional orchards have been lost since 1960 – bad news for wildlife, as orchards support a wide range of species including bats, woodpeckers and all sorts of insects. So if you have space, please plant a fruit tree or two! More: bit.ly/3jRFq8c

The UK has dug up many of its orchards and now imports 70% of its apples, often from across the world. Planting more apple trees in our gardens and communities would cut food miles, soak up CO2, help wildlife, and can help save traditional apple varieties. Every tree counts! 🍎

Next year, please let the dandelions grow! They support over 50 insects species. They're a great early season food source for pollinators including bees, butterflies and hoverflies. No need to mow. And please don't use weedkiller. RT if you're on board 🐝

Tidying the garden? Please don't cut back the ivy. Around now in the UK, it will be providing a vital late season pitstop for pollinating insects like bees, butterflies, hoverflies, moths. Then in winter, this native plant will offer berries for the birds.
