21-year-old George Harrison photographed in 1964 inside his Jaguar E-Type 3.8 with a Philips Auto-Mignon, a record player designed specifically for cars that played 45 RPM singles and used the car’s radio as an amplifier. The unit, launched by Philips around 1960, played the record automatically upon insertion and was designed to withstand the motion of a moving car. Although this format ultimately remained a technological curiosity in the face of more practical solutions, Harrison wasn’t the only Beatle to own one. John Lennon installed that same model in his Rolls-Royce Phantom V, at a time when choosing your own music while driving was still a rarity.
